hi there. my name is rizi. i am a nigerian too and i am here in los
angeles as a singer. i sing house music also known as techno. its very
high energy music and goes well with heavy african drumming too. i have
a show on august the 19th and i would like a team of just 2-4 men to come
and drum for me while i do my performance. they will just drum however
it follows my existing songs that i will perform to. it will only be for
about 10 minutes at a night club. very short performance between 12-12:10
am only and we will be finished with the performance. please let me know
if you are available to help me, then i can bring you the cd of my 2 songs
for the night so you can hear what it sounds like and see how you want
to compliment it. i am just an independent singer, not on major label,
so
please give me a fair price. it's only 10 minutes and all of the drummers
will enter the club for free and have 1-2 drinks on me. please, i hope
you can assist your fellow sister. ok, please email me back with your response.
thanks in advance. ps: if you know some good african dancers that can really
do the very fast, energetic moves, jumping, flipping, acrobatic style african
dance, i also need 2-4 of them(prefer men).

Smoking is a ticket off this planet to be with Jesus. There are so
many heart aches like no health insurance for the poor which does more
harm than smoking. The Courts no longer provide jury trials before sending
someone to prison. Nicotine is used by persons with Schizophrenia and has
a calming effect. There are so many other problems that are not talked
about or discussed. If you are anti-smoking you should stay away from smokers
but to brand someone for engaging in their God given right to self destruction
as long as they don't hurt anyone is pure White Man control and an attempt
to judge others and make them slave. Should homosexuality be banned because
it is a dangerous life style choice and a danger to young boys. The new
State Religion is the law. Government of the law, for the law and by the
law. Screw the people! http://randolph.hypermart.net/revolution for more.

Hi everybody. I just wanted to let you know about a new drum-carving
program in Ghana, West Africa. I'm from NY, and unfortunately can't get
out here to join the circle and tell you about it in person, so I figured
I'd tell you all about it here. This is a one-month program, where you
work one-on-one with skilled African drum-carvers and finish with a drum
you have carved yourself in the Ghanaian tradition. Accommodation, food,
and the completed drum are included. It is an amazing opportunity for anyone
who is interested in West African drumming and learning about West African
culture. We are looking for pioneering, adventurous souls who are willing
to be among the first to join up and help us inject life into this program.
Check out the site, http://www.accraartisansexchange.com. Thank you, Orly.

It seems that everytime I read another sufferer's agonizing story,
I shed more tears and feel my heart aching more and more! The pain that
I feel physically with my respiratory condition and for the sorrow and
grief of losing half my sick family to lung cancer and the agonizing sorrow
for other sufferers who share my pain seems endless! I wonder when this
pain will end. There are no words to begin to describe the horrible ache
in my heart and soul for the incredible loss I've experienced from this
nasty smoking habit. There are no words and my heart goes out to all the
countless other sufferers who are sick from exposure to secondhand smoke
and from the grief of losing their own loved ones! Let's keep up the fight
and keep up the great important work! We MUST protect children from this
nasty heinous poison known as environmental tobacco smoke! Children should
be protected and loved, not hurt and poisoned! I love you all! Please visit

HAZEL shedrums@earthlink.net or visit the web site www.shedrums.com SUMMER
SOLSTICE MAGIC The Most Sacred Days by Barbara Schermer Imagine this. Its
midnight and you slip naked into a pool fed by restorative volcanic waters.
Surrounded by the mists and the sweet scent of night blooming flowers,
you float suspended gazing up at a magnificent night sky. Now imagine you
are in this place in Greece two thousand years ago. After soaking in the
hot waters, a temple priestess/physician comes for you. She escorts you
inside the Asclepion, the healing temple of dreams. You snuggle into this
safe, cozy place to sleep in order to dream of a healing encounter with
Asklepios, the god of dreams himself. For more than one thousand years,
Greek citizens who felt sick or soul tired practiced this tradition of
dream healing. This month we, too, have the opportunity when each of us
can potentially have a profound and meaningful dream encounter. The Greeks
call this magical moment the "Kairos." In essence it means "auspicious
moment" or "god's moment," the exact time when the veils between the worlds
are thin and when the gods can hear and speak to us. We approach one such
collective Kairos moment now -- at the summer solstice on June 20 at 7:57pm
Chicago time. Yet incredibly this influence is stretched over a period
of seven days! This is as a result of a rare sequence of cosmic influences
from June 17 that continues through June 26. These are the most sacred
days of 2004. The Kairos moment begins as the New Moon moves into the mystical
sign of Cancer on June 17 at 11:37PM and according to yogic, esoteric Christian,
and pagan traditions, we then enter one of the four "spiritual gates" of
the year. These four spiritual gates swing open at each winter and summer
solstice and the fall and spring equinox. During these times it is easier
to ascend and touch the higher, mystical planes while being washed with
a shower of fresh spiritual forces. How can you best use these sacred days?
Go to an environment you feel is sacred -- your bedroom, the "grandmother"
tree on your property, the lake, or make a pilgrimage to your special sacred
site. Participate in a purification ritual like a bath, sauna, or sweat
lodge. Quiet and center yourself. When the Kairos moment approaches, simply
ask, with intention, to be given a healing dream. Ask this repeatedly and
often, like a prayer, over these auspicious days. The god of dreams, Asklepios,
is willing to help you now if you will but listen to the messages of your
dreams. Sacred Times of the Summer Solstice (Chicago time) Begins: June
17 at 11:37pm New Moon In Cancer Ends: June 26 at 10:17 pm Sanctuary's
Mid-Summer Nights Dream-Dance Ways to Receive: * Ask for a dream in the
form of a prayer or a meditation. * Be receptive to what is given. * Record
your dream in all detail to remember and reflect upon. * Translate the
dream into a piece of art. * Use the flower essence calendula (available
at health food and holistic stores) in drinking water or in your bath.
Calendula is called "the listening essence" to bring greater awareness
and receptivity to what is being said. The Summer Solstice is also known
as: Alban Heflin, Alben Heruin, All-couples day, Feast of Epona, Feast
of St. John the Baptist, Feill-Sheathain, Gathering Day, Johannistag, Litha,
Midsummer, Sonnwend, Thing-Tide, Vestalia, etc. "Solstice" is derived from
two Latin words: "sol" meaning sun, and "sistere," to cause to stand still.
This is because, as the summer solstice approaches, the noonday sun rises
higher and higher in the sky on each successive day. On the day of the
solstice, the sun appears to stay at the apex. In this sense, it "stands
still." The Summer Solstice Dreams It is said that whatever is dreamed
this night will come to pass÷certainly Shakespeare acknowledged
the magic of this time in A Midsummer Night's Dream. With the warmth of
the season caressing the land, the celebration of the Summer Solstice brings
forth a truly joyous recognition that we can now enjoy the fruits of our
labors in the past season. It is not surprising that this same spirit of
pleasure and fun had carried over into our modern-day recognition of this,
the longest day of the year. The Summer Solstice is a time of light and
of fire. It is a time to reflect upon the growth of the season: the seeds
that were planted in the earth and the seeds planted in our souls. It is
a time of love and growth of the heart as well. The First Harvest This
is the time of the first harvest, which consisting of the herbs planted
during the Vernal Equinox. Used for food, medicines and ritual, these gifts
of the land clearly denote the importance of the harvest and the cycle
of growth to the body, mind and soul. A Grand Tribal Gathering Time...since
ancient days... The Goddess manifests as Mother Earth... pregnant with
the bounty of life...& the God...as the Sun King at his height...It
is a festival of community sharing & planetary service...A Sacred Fire
burns throughout the shortest night...All stay up...on Solstice Eve...
to welcome the rising Sun at dawn...Making a pledge to Mother Earth...something
that we will do to improve the environment...& then DOING IT !!!...
Let there be a magical gift exchange with friends... Share songs, chants,
and stories with others... Do ecstatic dancing...to drums...around the
blazing bonfire... Of the Heart· Blessings & Peace ' H.A.G.

SEXUAL DOMINATION IN UNIFORM: AN AMERICAN VALUE By Linda Burnham* Women
of Color Resource Center, www.coloredgirls.org The Abu Ghraib portraits
of sexual humiliation and submission have exposed the unbelievably tangled
strands of racism, misogyny, homophobia, national arrogance and hyper-masculinity
that characterize the U.S. military. Militarized sexual domination is neither
"contrary to American values" nor simply the work of a few "bad apples."
It is, rather, a daily practice. The "bad apples" defense is both unspeakably
inadequate and completely disingenuous. While narrowing the scope of inquiry
to individual transgression may provide a convenient protective shield
for the military, it also deflects attention away from very troubling realities.
The photos of Abu Ghraib reveal as much about our nation as they do about
the soldiers of the 372nd Military Police Company. As our president made
clear, the intent of the invasion and occupation of Iraq was to bring the
Iraqi opposition to its knees. Why then the surprise that soldiers would
be thrilled to comply so literally? The scenario in which an Iraqi man
kneels with the penis of another in or near his mouth shocked us all. But
our leaders' call for the naked humiliation of Arabs and Muslims was not
so muted that only a few stray soldiers heard. Iraqi prisoners made to
wear women's underwear. Those who battled for women's equal right to serve
should take heed. Degradation and weakness are still equated with the female
in this man's army. Much has been made of the role of Private Lynndie England,
the thumbs-up girl of prisoner abuse. Her culpability seems manifest and,
back on home turf, England will have to fight for her soul the best way
she knows how. But England is the second cover girl for the Iraq installment
of the U.S. military's sexual integration story. Jessica Lynch was the
first. Two fresh-faced, working-class, small-town girls eager to escape
the limitations of location and station. Escape they did, into the welcoming
arms of an institution that used one to rally the nation, spinning a narrative
of the endangered but plucky female, rescued from the dark barbarian hordes.
It will use the other as sacrifice to assuage the anxieties of a troubled
nation. In her role as dominatrix over Iraqi men England exposed the sexualization
of national conquest. As a participant in the militarized construction
of the masculine she inaugurated a brand new, frightening archetype: dominant-nation
female as joyful agent of sexual, national, racial and religious humiliation.
How's that for liberation? Lynndie England aside, the scenes at Abu Ghraib
depict sexual domination as a feature of military hyper-masculinity. The
horrific Denver Post revelations of the sexual assault and rape of multitudes
of servicewomen are a further indication that sexual domination in uniform
is hardly a rarity. Our military is built upon the daily subjugation of
the sexual lives of thousands upon thousands of women to the sexual appetites
of servicemen overseas. Subordinating the national interests of countries
the world over to the geo-political interests of the U.S. seemingly requires
the sexual sacrifice of some portion of these nations' women--poor women,
always. Military prostitution is viewed as rest and relaxation, entertainment
for the troops. While the purported "goal" of the sexual humiliation of
Abu Ghraib prisoners was to extract vital information, the photos tell
a more twisted story. The cheery faces tell us that dramatizing the metaphoric
rape of the Iraqi nation by acting out the sexual domination of Iraqi men
was big fun. Casting themselves as directors and actors in the drama of
sexual humiliation, the prison guards clearly believed that they could
do whatever they wished, and thoroughly enjoy themselves in the process.
Was it un-American for them to think so? Not when the core message of their
commander-in-chief to the Iraqi people has been, "You will bow down to
our capacity to dominate, and we will exercise that capacity despite global
opposition." The struggle over assigning culpability has taken on the character
of a high-stakes political tango. That struggle will intensify. Although
there's no question but that everyone responsible, from the immediate perpetrators
on up, must be held to account, culpability runs far deeper. It may be
hard to get up in the morning and face this fact, but we are, collectively,
as guilty as hell. We elect representatives who feed the military monster.
We honor sadistic hyper-masculinity, awarding those who portray it best
with governorships (e.g. Arnold Schwarzenneger). We devote vast resources
to bondage and discipline in our criminal justice system. And we lie to
ourselves unceasingly. The world is weary of, and profoundly angered by,
America's tattered claim of innocence. The soldiers at Abu Ghraib pulled
back the curtain on their perverse enactments so that we may see who we
are. Do we have the courage to look? Do we have the will to change?

To: Police Chief Bratton Also solution to California State Budget Crisis.
Crisis Solved easily and completely. It is time for the Wallmart Solution.
www.RandySolutions.com www.NakedPicassos.com get it on the ballot. I am
a Native Californian and was born and raised in Fresno, Ca. The arm pit
of California. Viva Caesar Chavez and Viva La Rasa. My biggest problem
is trying to heat a tortilla in the micro wave. I was a Hippie in the 60âs
and smoked allot of marijuana but never got into any other drugs and respect
the Native American and Mexican cultures as the Mexicans use marijuana
for medicine and it is good medicine. Well Iâve never heard of anyone
becoming physically addicted to marijuana and having withdrawals and all
that stuff you hear about if all they do is smoke some marijuana. #1 History
will prove that those who prosecuted, convicted and sent to prison people
for possession or use of just marijuana have violated those persons civil
rights and should be convicted and sent to a Federal Penitentiary for abuse
of God given rights and also rights guaranteed by the Constitution which
it looks more and more like has been thrown in the trash by Government
and Police agencies. Especially the part about cruel and un-usual punishment.
I do not use marijuana and only point this out because you have serious
problems and I mean your job not you personally have some serious issues
of resources and duties to carry out and provide for the citizens of L.A.
I am trying to help and educate you a little. I also have an ear on the
street and because I am in Venice and have no desire to venture out of
Venice or California for that matter I think I can express some realities
and some common sense. The issue of crime and your passion to eliminate
it, is where we have common ground. I would suggest that you instruct your
police officers who do duty at Venice Beach to quit writing tickets for
awhile and relax a bit and enjoy the beach. You know giving someone a ticket
on Speedway where you can barely crawl along at 10 to 15 mph is like issuing
tickets on the 405 during rush hour traffic. You donât even need
a vehicle you can just place police officers on the freeway on foot pulling
people over to write them up. Like shooting ducks in a barrel. The people
on the street see a police officer writing someone a ticket and automatically
assume just another mugging by LAPD. Yes LAPD in Venice are considered
Muggers. How else do you explain someone carrying a gun and stopping someone
minding their own business and doing no one any harm being made to hand
over bucks to the City of L.A. #2 If you want to stop traffic violators
from causing serious injury and harm to their fellow drivers you simply
need to get some thrashed out old under cover cars and place officers in
them with a video camera and dress them like ordinary or un-ordinary people
and let them drive out into traffic on the highways and by ways and find
the bad drivers who disregard traffic laws and the other citizens and video
them and haul their asses into court and provide a jury and hang em high.
Not
literally of course but why in the world do you set up traffic traps to
write tickets and let the bad drivers get away. It is easy to spot them
almost everywhere you drive. This solves the traffic issue and everyone
would be looking over their shoulder when they drive and they should cause
their fellow citizens are out there driving as well. #3 The no smoking
ban on the Venice Beach has crossed the line because you are now messing
with Native American ritual and tobacco no matter how bad one may perceive
it is a Native American ritual that is still practiced today on the beach
with drums pounding. This was done long before Columbus was even born and
goes back many thousands of years now here on the beach here in Venice.
The world famous Venice Beach drum circle is sacred ground and now you
have placed yourselves in a battle that has been going on since the White
Man first arrived on our shores. We are Americans and defending our Constitution
and you are acting like the Taliban and Naziâs. Oh by the way the
lack of health insurance at affordable prices is far more a travesty and
does more harm to our society than smoking does. In fact it is now our
duty to see to it that your health insurance is taken away so you can feel
our pain. Yes cut backs are a huge priority and the citizens not only want
to cut you down but in many cases make you feel our pain. Yes eliminate
all health care for government workers because they make enough to buy
their own. Yes this is a great campaign. Budget Crisis solved just like
Wallmart! Also we are spending Billions in South America to kill Native
South Americans when if this money were put into health care and people
with drug problems could go to a local hospital and get their drugs for
free and some treatment then the drug crime would stop over night and crime
would go down to almost nothing because there would be no profit in drugs.
I would suggest that you tear down all your dumb signs on the beach and
put on some shorts, maybe bring a drum and smoke a peace pipe with us drummers
down on Venice Beach. NO TALK and there will be no talk with white man
ever again cause white man speaks with forked tongue so if you come there
will be no talk but if you smoke a peace pipe or play a drum with us we
will understand that you understand.

Better explanation. Gulp! The first thing that must be done is to tear
down LAPD signs. Can someone pay a homeless person to do it. Gulp! Let's
stay non-violent and Remember Martin Luther King Jr. God bless him a great
American and probably one of the Greatest. We can so close to a civil war
and he brought peace. Raven RedBone of Rebone "Come and get your Love"
a great Native American told me they are messing with Ceremony (tobacco
is used in Native American ceremony with drums on the beach) Can we organize
protests against the City of L.A. and LAPD and they are banning smoking
on the Beach here in Venice and we will see the will of Venice and see
if it is still Bohemian and smokey or has become simply a place like most
others with no heavos. We are saying and claiming this is un-Constitutional
and this is White Supremacy and Anti Native American Culture also their
attack on the Drum Circle is un-constitutional as drummers must practice
their art and culture as it has been this way since the beginning of time.
I talked to a cop and he said everyone at the drum circle is smoking marijuana.
I'm not and like I told him the drum circle is a reflection of what you
find everywhere in Society and that they LAPD are Taliban Nazi's just following
the orders of the White European prejudice and White supremacists who hate
the Native American Culture and are threatened by it. Another attempt at
cultural genocide. The Rasta's smoke weed as a service to our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. The Mexicans use marijuana for medicine and it is
good medicine. I buy aspirin. Copy this and pass it on and letâs
see what we can get done. Stopping the Drum Circle in the evening is Un-Constitutional
and because of our tolerance they have gone further and have abused us
drummers and Venetians as well as the tourists to far now. The drum circle
must march now. White man speaks with fork tongue so you can't believe
anything they say. We must march. They LAPD and government officials won't
communicate by email because this would provide transparency and true democracy
and expose their insanity, greed, and corruption. I have talked to the
Cops on the Beach and they say the City Attorney has told them it is legal
to pull out your penis and piss in public without being arrested but if
you smoke or play your drums they will arrest you. They the Taliban L.A.
government and LAPD are insane and have lost their minds. They trash the
constitution and forget that anyone whether ordered by the government or
not that abuse someoneâs Civil Rights must be prosecuted and serve
time in a Federal Penitentiary. They are using the same defense as the
Naziâs used and say it is the law and they are following orders.
The Constitution is the supreme law of the land not their puny little prejudicial
ordinances. In fact it is our duty as Americans to defend the Constitution
and if someone like the puny L.A. corrupt government can trash the Constitution
this opens all kinds of avenues for them to continue to abuse civil liberties
and use their tyranny to mug law abiding citizens to collect money from
them and make peoples lives hell. Someone needs to post the Ten Commandments
on the court house door and start a non-violent revolution. Are we going
to take it any more? www.RandySolutions.com www.NakedPicassos.com if Venice
becomes a place not to go they will lose money and be seen for what they
are, ignorant. We donât care if the tourists donât come anymore.
We have to live here or is this really what they want for greedy land owners.
I wonder. If a public official communicates with you please tell them to
send an email and do not talk to them unless it is by email. Otherwise
they will do to you what they did to Crazy Horse. They will stab you to
death after inviting you to a meeting. Years of dis-regarding the Constitution
has built them a kingdom of money and ease and they have lost their minds
with power, lust and greed. Do any of them have to live without health
insurance, pensions and other Government, Corporate welfare at our expense?
We need to find legal assistance and please pass this on and it is time
to fight non-violently with boycotts, stop traffic without causing any
serious harm, public dis-obedience, verbal abuse for the police to make
them think and be un-comfortable and we need public citizen patrols to
follow the Police and nail them when they break the law and everyone breaks
the law because the law seems to be a vehicle for control not the common
good. Is it time for Class Warfare? If we donât do something we deserve
to be slaves and we will deserve a Saddam or an Arnold to rule over us.
Citizen patrols to follow the police are quit effective in an oppressive
Police State environment. Any Volunteers? especially legal students and
anyone who loves America and Native American Culture and the Arts. Any
ideas? Heaven forbid LAPD over react and cause Venice to become violent
and un-safe.

I have come to a place along my journey where I must travel to Venice Beach.
Since I am from the "bush" and have lived on the Rez most of my life, you
will understand when I say that when I researched the Venice Beach area
I became all too aware that I will indeed be a fish out of water. I have
to find a particular person while I am in that area who is to help me in
the gathering of 13 Sacred Medicine Bundle Carriers. Your site is the closest
thing I could find to a "Native" community that I could seek help from.
I am asking for a plaace or places to stay during my stay there. I am not
a wealthy person and certanly could not afford the money for a hotel, and
I am not sure a Hostel is the place where I can cultivate that spiritual
atmosphere that I will need for meditation and ceremony. I am willing to
pay by the week if I was to find a "SAFE HAVEN" for my duration there in
your land. I am hoping that I will not be there longer than a few weeks.
If anyone has any information I would be humbly grateful. Also, if you
would care to read about my sacred journey thus far (and it is far from
over) you may do so at: www.niimki.com Scroll down to the bottom of the
page and click on Aagii's Journey (story, or adventure) Enter on the next
window and then find Aagii's journey again and there you may read. Don't
forget to go back to the main page and click on "Updates" as the rest of
the story after Australia is there as well. Does anyone feel led to be
a part of this great journey of peace and the ushering in of my peoples
prophecies.. pleace email me. I will respond to all emails regarding this.
I thank you all from my heart. Megwech (thank you) and Bekaadendang ( feel
peaceful inside yourself) Aagii

Can we organize protests against the City of L.A. and LAPD and they
are supposedly banning smoking on the Beach here in Venice and we will
see the will of Venice and see if it is still Bohemian or has become simply
a place with no Heavos like every where else. We are saying this is White
Supremacy and Anti Native American Culture also their attack on the Drum
Circle as I just talked to a cop and he said everyone at the drumcircle
is smoking marijuana. I'm not and like I told him the drum circle is a
reflection of what you find everywhere in Society and that they LAPD are
Taliban Nazi's just following the orders of the White European prejudice
and White supremacists who hate the Native American Culture and are threatened
by it. The Rasta's smoke weed as a service to our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. Pass on this email and lets see what we can get done. Stopping
the Drumcircle in the evening is Un-Constitutional and because of our tolerance
they have gone further. The drumcircle must march now. White man speaks
with fork tongue so you can't believe anything they say. We must march.
They LAPD won't communicate by email because this would provide transparency
and true democracy and expose their insanity, greed, and corruption. Have
talked to the Cops on the Beach. Can you imagine if what they say in public
conversations were said in an email. They are total jerks and the City
Attorney has lost his mind because it is legal to pull out your penis and
piss in public without being arrested but if you smoke or play your drums
they will arrest you. www.RandySolutions.com www.NakedPicassos.com free

ON THE EVE TO DRUM & DANCE & SING A HEALING RHYTHM THAT WILL WEAVE
THE BUDDHA MOON A WING UP FROM THE WATERS TO RECEIVE A BELTANE BLESSING·
THE EVE OF THE FULL BUDDHA-FLOWER MOON ******MONDAY MAY 3 2004 come gather
as we celebrate Beltane * 7:30 - 9:30 pm AT THE STONE CIRCLE FIRE-PIT ON
THE LANDFILL OF NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY EVANSTON, IL. THE SOUTH END OF
THE CAMPUS, SHERIDAN RD. AT CLARK ST. NORTH OF DEMPSTER, PAST CHURCH ST.
YOUâLL SEE CENTENNIAL PARK ON THE RIGHT, KEEP GOING STRAIGHT INTO
THE CAMPUS PARKING LOT·IGNORE THE PERMIT ONLY SIGNS, THEY DONâT
APPLY IN THE EVENINGS OR ON THE WEEKENDS·WALK OVER THE FOOTBRIDGE
ONTO THE LANDFILL LAKE SIDE TO THE FIRE-PIT· ******Beltane Also
known as May Eve, May Day, and Walpurgis Night, happens at the beginning
of May. It celebrates the height of Spring and the flowering of life. The
Goddess manifests as the May Queen and Flora. The God emerges as the May
King and Jack in the Green. The danced Maypole represents Their unity,
with the pole itself being the God and the ribbons that encompass it, the
Goddess. Colors are the Rainbow spectrum. Beltane is a festival of flowers,
fertility, sensuality, and delight. ******Full Moon in Scorpio ******Tuesday,
May 4, 1:34 pm PDT This Full Moon is a total lunar eclipse, one that brings
up deep emotional issues from the past so that we may be free of them in
the future. Diffusive Neptune square the Sun and Moon further expands feelings,
leading to exaggeration, misdirection and overwhelm. Forgiving yourself
and others helps you find the way from an old wound to a new healing, untying
knots that block fulfillment, especially in relationships. ******Jupiter
Direct Tuesday, May 4 Expansive Jupiter, somewhat restrained in tight-fitting
Virgo, begins to find more external expression as it moves forward in the
zodiac. Plans bubbling on the inside (or in the unconscious) move towards
the surface where we can start to put them into action. *Beltane...the
old Celtic name for May Day...means bright fire or fire of Bel, the name
of the solar force...whoâs feast marks the beginning of the 2nd half
of the year.../Wood from 9 sacred trees are gathered, & the great Bel-fire
is built & ritualistically ignited by the High priestess or Arch-Druid·the
people would jump these Îneed-firesâ for fertility, healing
& protection. Torches lit from it were carried home to re-light the
hearth fires...they would walk the animals in-between them to ensure a
good season...this is the mating season after all for man & beast·there
were other May Day customs, like, walking the circuit of oneâs property,
repairing fences & boundary markers, processions of all kinds, archery
tournaments, Morris dances, sword play, & of course making merry with
music & drinking.../May morning is a time when the veil between the
worlds can easily be pushed aside·but instead of the spirits coming
into our realm from the other side·which is the case with Halloween·the
polar opposite of May Day, on the wheel of the year·the fairies
can enchant us over into their mystical realms·this is a magical
time·perfect for gathering Îwildâ water...especially
the May morning dew, or water from hidden wells & springs...these wild
waters were collected & used to bath in for beauty, or to drink for
health.../May Day is considered the start of summer...the time of milk
& honey·this sensuous fertile energy is totally universal·&
can be applied on many different levels·when we acknowledge these
creative forces in the dance of our lives, it takes us to our own personal,
modern-day version of dancing around the Maypole... where we weave &
combine the opposing energies within ourselves... blending them into one
balanced source...so yes, whether you know it or not, there will be at
least one song that plays in your sub-conscious head this week, when you
are The God & Goddess of this ancient May Day ritual...the Queen of
the May & Her loving consort·because our body like the body
of the earth instinctively knows itâs Beltane...the time of vitality
& passion & new growth...& the wisdom of our spirit seeks the
natural union of polarities that occur at this time...giving us the opportunity
for integration... in the alchemical dance of our souls· Because
under all the sexual innuendo & frivolity, itâs really all about
the inner mystic marriage, the symbolic union, of fire & water, opposites
complimenting each other, to become one, bringing all the elements into
balance.../youâll just have to go dancing naked in the forest preserve
on your own time...for now, lets work to unify the polarities of our being,
by sparking the new fire of creative fertility & passion...& marrying
it with the beautiful, healing waters of compassion & pure love...So
we can truly celebrate the marriage feast of our lives, with a grounded,
mindful joy... Blessings & Peace - H.A.G. FOR MORE INFO Call Hazel

Denise, The GPDC is located near the Griffith Park Merry-go-round near
a 6-way stop sign intersection in Travel Town in Griffith Park. If you
come in to Griffith Park from Los Feliz Blvd on Riverside, continue on
Riverside pass the pony rides for kids, pass a stop sign, and make a left
on the next stop sign at the 6-way stop sign intersection. The Drum Circle
will be on your immediate left. You can park on the red curb as everybody
else does, and you won't get a ticket. In short, enter the park on Los
Feliz and Riverside, make a left on the second stop sign. The circle starts
as early as noon sometimes and goes on until dark. Have fun. Joseph

Hello Sondra! I am a university student in scotland, and I just wanted
to say thankyou for such a beautiful site. I attended the drum circle every
sunday during my one month stay in Los Angeles in Januray and was so happy
to find a place in such a huge city where everyone was equal and happy
and at peace. Here I found people who without speaking seamed to be in
total understanding of each other and moved and breathed as one, I have
never felt so at home. I am truly greatful for being part of such a wonderful
experience and hope that the california I always wished and dreamed of
seeing will still be alive in Venice beach for my babies to see in the
future. Keep wearing flowers in your hair xo April

Without people like Marc Madow, the creator of the Venice Beach Video
and strong supporter of drumcircles and peace, this world would be terrible
and confined. His continues efforts and activism against the corrupt and
scrupulous government needs to be highly respected and praised. When other
people sit in front of their TV and watch the Bachelor, he is actively
involved with the preservation of our freedom and peace. He has proven
this with actions on Public Television and other countless proclamations
to fight for peace and uncover government scrutiny. I'm extremely proud
to have him on my list of limited friends.

I have some information I would like to bring to the attention of all
those Drummers, Dancers and Visitors to the Drumcircle here at the World
Famous Venice Beach... I was contacted by: Gita Isagholian Office of the
City Attorney Deputy City Attorney Neighborhood Prosecutor Program Pacific
Division She wanted to meet with a few drummers from the Venice Beach Drum
Circle along with our new Sergeant OâNeil, & senior Officer Peggy
Thusing from the LAPD Pacific Division Beach Patrol. So in attendance were
the fore mentioned and Marc Madow , Joseph Tiu, John Camerea, Ron Green,
Lora Cain and myself. The conversation was open and informative they wanted
to know what our concerns are and wanted us to know what their concerns
are. First I must mention that the police admitted that this yearâs
incidents at the Drumcircle are less than at this time last year. But none
the less we still have a large number of arrests at the Drumcircle for
drinking, smoking and various other incidences. Now, we all know how unruly
people can become after consuming large amounts of alcohol. Please note:
Drinking is illegal on our Very Beautiful Venice Beach. This is a State
Park for many to use and enjoy. Parents bring their children to our Drumcircle
and should not be subject to that kind of behavior. We should make our
Drumcircle safe and sound for everyone to enjoy so if we ãPoliceä
ourselves and let those we see know that drinking at the Drumcircle is
not allowed. And if the veteran drummers who consider themselves leaders
were to set a good example for everyone to follow we will have a safer
Drumcircle and we will have fewer visits from the police to make those
kinds of arrests. By working together we can make the Drumcircle a GREAT
EXPERIENCE for everyone. Everyone in attendance agreed to do their part.
Another request was to have the Drumcircle move even closer to the water.
This will help keep the chronic complainers a little quieter. I ask·Why
in the world would anyone move to Venice Beach for peace and quiet? This
is beyond me! Are they out of their minds·after all Abbot Kinney
built Venice Beach with a carnival atmosphere in mind! Venice Beach is
a State Park full of hippies, artists and performers the good, the bad
and the ugly. I like to quote a good friend of mine who says "Venice Beach
without the Drumcircle is like Disneyland without Mickey Mouse!" We can
all coexist in peace and HELLO! Drumming is not a crime! The healing powers
of the Drumcircle are felt by many including me. Any way, it is not a hard
thing to do to preserve our Drumcircle. The Venice Beach Drum Circle has
a flavor of its own that can not be found anywhere else on earth! Everyone
is welcome to join in the fun at the Venice Beach Drum Circle no matter
what race, religion, age, size, expertise, or even instrument they choose
to play. OK·So by moving closer to the water we will be quieter
for ãthemä the chronic complainers and it will be prettier
and cooler for us. Finally when the Beach Patrol calls it a night (roughly
one hour past sunset) they will continue to ask for our cooperation in
shutting down for the night and setting a good example for those who do
not know that we are being shut down for our own safety. When the four
wheel drive beach patrol vehicles go home for the night the regular police
cruisers take over and they can not get to out to the sand fast enough
in case of an emergency. So for our own safety let's continue to cooperate
and call it a night when the lights from the SUV's are shining on us. You
know I think secretly some of them like our music and energy when it is
positive and safe (as it should be). You know some of them gotta' have
rhythm in their souls just like us. When the Police come roughly one hour
past sunset and shine the lights on the Drumcircle it is time for us to
set a good example for everyone there by stopping our drumming and dancing
and spreading the word it is time to quit for the night until the next
Saturday, Sunday, or Holiday afternoon that we gather again on the sand
to drum and dance. If we all work together to help preserve the Drumcircle
it will be around for another 50 years for our childrenâs children
to enjoy! Don't ya know? On behalf of the Venice Beach Drum Circle I would
like to Thank the LAPD Pacific Division Beach Patrol for keeping our Very
Beautiful Venice Beach a safe and fun place to live, visit and drum! This
thanx also goes out to those who have left the Beach Patrol for one reason
or another, you are missed. Now I ask you...how could anyone lever leave
this beach? ;-) Also Thank-you Gita Gita Isagholian Deputy City Attorney
Neighborhood Prosecutor Program Pacific Division (it was a pleasure meeting
you) for calling the meeting and if you were to need any of us again please
feel free to contact any one of us again. So let's keep on Drumming! Foot
note: The police showed us a great deal of respect and in this case they
should get respect back. Their spirit of cooperation is unusually high
and we should not take it for granted. There are too many other situations
where the police and the "policed" can't find grounds to get along. This
is an exception and it should be preserved if possible.

In my opinion all comments and events should be welcome on this message
board! If it is information that can help others find other drumming events/circles
here and as a matter of fact all around the world (some from Australia
too) then it is something that should be included for everyone. Those who
are close minded enough to think that drum circles only happen at Venice
Beach are sadly mistaken. There is also a very fine Drumcircle at Griffith
Park that I also frequent. Have you also checked out the Drumcircles in
Santa Barbara or even Huntington Beach they too are fun! For everyone ·please
do keep entering all the drumming events that come your way here and abroad
to let others know where else one can go to drum! But do not forget the
beach, sand, surf, and drumming at the World Famous Venice Beach.

Highlander, Thank you for your entry into our Guestbook. I agree with
what you say about where the message types are heading. But, I still don't
understand the reason. With over six-hundred people taking the first step
to make an entry by visiting the page and then deciding not to actually
write something......That's what is confusing. They, the ones who should
say something interesting don't and then the commercial messages overpopulate
the message board. If only two hundred of those six-hundred people were
to write something important the other commercial oriented messages would
be totally lost in a sea of interesting material. One thing is that lately
the police have not hasseled the Drumcircle as much as before and perhaps
people are taking both the beach and the message board a bit for granted.
I hope that you will visit Venice again sometime soon.
Marc <brokencamera@yellowhammer.com>
Lake Oswego, OR - Monday, July 08, 2002 at 11:15:22 (PDT)
Marc, the lessening of people writing on the message board may be due
to the appearance that it is (sadly) becoming an advertising spot for Malibu
Phoenix and no longer about the Venice Beach Drum Circle per se. I haven't
read an entry about/from the VBDC for a while, and I spend most of my time
scrolling past the verbose and self-promotion entries from the Phoenix
and others who seem to be using this message board to promote themselves
and their products. I love the VBDC and miss going there every Sunday since
returning to Canada. The VBDC was about drumming, dancing, and community
-- and it was FREEly given by many talented and diverse people. If this
message board is about the VBDC, then the entries should reflect that.
If people continue to market themselves or their events through this message
board, then they aren't honoring the people who make up the VBDC or the
Circle itself.

I'm really puzzled. I just checked the control panel for our websites
and it indicates that 4,221 visits have been made to the Guestbook since
the last time the counters were reset. That's great. For the specialized
topic that our sites are all about these numbers are just fine. Its obvious
that people are reading the Guestbook entries. What's puzzling is that
the page for adding entries has been visited 631 times in the same time
period which is also a good figure. What doesn't make sense is that we
don't have anywhere near 631 entries into the Guestbook in this time period.
I can only guess that people are visiting the page and then not writing
and submitting their thoughts. There have been no technical issues that
I'm aware of during this time that would have affected the addition of
Guestbook entries. The only thing that I can think of is that people like
to read the entries of others but are too lazy to write about their own
thoughts. Or, perhaps people are reluctant to list their eMail address
thinking that the spam-harvesters will get their eMail address and bombard
them with unwanted garbage for all sorts of rubbish they don't need. This
should be no problem as you can just leave any field blank that you like
including your name, city or eMail address and the text of your entry will
be gladly accepted. I just can't believe that so many people are just voyeurs
that like to look but have nothing to share in words. I hope that anyone
reading this will realize that the welcome mat is out for your thoughts
and we would all benefit from more entries by a larger pool of people who
have thoughts about the Venice Beach Boardwalk, The Venice Beach Drumcircle,
Other Drumcircles, The Venice Beach Video, Counterculture Happenings, Or????
Hoping to hear from more of you soon....

I remember the music we used to make in Laguna thirty years ago, in
the sands. I wonder if any of those brothers and sisters attend the Venice
Beach drumcircle today. I have just written a book about the old days when
some of us where homeless and living on the California beaches, making
music, watching sunsets, living the life, young and free. It is called
PAGAN LOVE AND WILDING HEARTS. The entire book is on the internet, 31 chapters.
Please check it out and write me back telling me what you think. You will

Malibu, CA USA - Wednesday, June 05, 2002 at 14:32:37 (PDT)
Go to this gathering if you can. You will never forget it what it is
like camping with so many people in a money-free zone. Here is all the
information so far on the North American Rainbow Gathering of the North
American Tribes to be held from late June till July 7th of this year (most
likely in northern Wisconsin). All peace-loving nature-tuned people are
welcome to attend. DO NOT FORGET TO BRING PLENTY OF BULK FOOD ITEMS TO
DONATE TO THE KITCHENS OF YOUR CHOICE. Vegan kitchen supplies are best.
Anything from gallons of maple syrup to herbs and spices to boxes of cookies
and crackers and spreads and sauces of all sorts to pastas and dried fruits
and berries and large boxes of anything such as fruits and vegetables.
Especially boxes of fruits and vegetables are a welcome donation at any
kitchen. Make sure to donate AT LEAST two hours of your time each day to
one of the kitchens doing anything from boiling water, to collecting wood,
to washing dishes, to making food. Don't forget to bring flashlights with
extra batteries. Bring sweet little gifts, such as stone beads or crystals
or small gift boxes or some other type of little gift, to give out randomly
to people who you spend time with at the gathering. Remember to not spend
any money at the gathering. You may trade or barter or give freely. But
please do not use money. Hug other gatherers and make them feel welcome.
Respect the land, trees, bushes and energy of the gathering. Do not bring
any type of electronic music or electronic instruments. Bring organic instruments.
Come a week early and help build the kitchens. Stay after July 7th and
help with the cleanup crew. Clean up starts the day you arrive, so be sure
to always help keep the land clean and free of trash. Make sure to bring
your own metal cup, bowl, plate, spoon, fork. Go to your local Army surplus
store. Get an air mattress. It will likely rain. Bring a plastic tarp to
tie over your tent. Yes, tents are supposed to be waterproof. But anyone
who has camped in the rain knows otherwise. Bring closed toe shoes, and
extra cotton socks. Dirty cotton socks can always be burned when you are
done using them. Closed toe shoes and socks can help prevent tic bites.
And prevent your feet from becoming chapped from constant exposure to ground
and grass and dew and rain. Sandals are good, but also bring closed-toe
shoes, such as hiking boots or tennis shoes. Bring rope and colored natural
fabrics to create your own privacy space around your tent. If you like
to be away from the commotion, camp far away from the main field, out in
the woods, such as by your favorite kitchen. Being by a kitchen that is
connected to the main water source is a bunus (the water source will be
a river connected by hose to the kitchens). Bringing one bottle of drinking
water for each of your days there is a bonus, although the kitchens will
always have water available that has been boiled for drinking and making
food. This is to take place out away from any towns or cities. So there
will be no tap water, no electricity, no facilities (other than the toilets
that will be dug in the ground at set locations throughout the gathering
area). Remember, chocolate and cookies are an amazing thing to bring. The
bliss kittens will love you for it. This year the North American Rainbow
Gathering (hence referred to as the Gathering) will be in the Western Great
Lakes region (Wisconsin, Minnesota or Michigan) over the 4th of July. Feel
free to come a few week early to help build the gathering infrastructure
or stay a few weeks late to help disappear all traces of our gathering.Information

An Honor To Ibrahim! One of the very talented drummers who plays often
along the Venice Beach Boardwalk with the group Compa and at the Drumcircle
as well has been honored as one of the subjects portrayed on the large
mural recently completed on the wall of the Pioneer French Bakery on Rose
street in Venice. You've got to go check it out. Ibraham is shown with
his drum and what seems to be the same cool hat that he's wearing in our
video Venice Beach. If you see Ibraham on the Boardwalk why not congratulate
him and introduce yourself. He's a great guy and a true treasure of Venice
Beach.

I ordered the Venice Beach video a while ago looking for an original
gift for my girlfriend (who i met in Venice Beach) for Christmas. Being
from Europe i didn't entirely trust the transaction and was quite sure
it was going to take weeks (at least!). Giving away your credit card number
and all... But about 7 days after i ordered it the mailman already rang!
Talking about swift shipping! I mean, if i send any letters to LA it takes
about two weeks. The video rocked! I experienced the whole Venice Beach
feeling again; the street performers, Harry Perry,... Damn, am i 'homesick'!!!!
To everyone who ever visited Venice Beach: get this video! I rarely get
lyrical about things like this, but this deserves an exception. VENICE

Greeting , My name is Jim Koecher . I have just returned from Africa
with 400 beautifully carved djembes and 25 or so assorted drums . The drums
are 22-24î tall by 12-14î diameter. They are all double weaved. The line
carved drums are $200 and the recessed carved drums are $250. These are
great Prices. Now for the rest of the story. Six months ago I was the Captain
of a ship delivering humanitarian aid to third world countries . I saw
donated food rotting in government warehouses because the people on the
street had no money to buy it . I have since left the maritime field and
went back to Africa. I found myself in a remote village talking to a man
with one leg. ìHelp us we have no jobs to buy foodî What could I say? but
ìOKî. I took my savings bought 400 drums and shipped them to the states.
A portion of my profits will help fund the WE ARE ONE WORLD PROJECT . This
project is designed to help those at the bottom of the food chain by creating
jobs were they can make money to buy the food that is donated by various
charity organizations . The Project will teach the villagers a skill creating
traditional African wares. Then ì WE ARE ONE WORLD Imports will purchase
these wares and market them in the States. This will provide the villagers
with the money needed to purchase food. Also a portion of the profits will
go back to fund more projects. If you or anyone you know might be interested
in a beautiful drum at a great price or would like to know more about the
project please contact me at weare1worldimports@hotmail.com or 907-299-0575
Thanks for your time Jim Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach

Sorry to hear about the cameras being installed on the Beaches in California.
But it was just a matter of time you know. And the cameras will get better
and better as technology improves, and more numerous. So I am writing just
to remind you Californian brothers and sisters that there really IS such
a magical place as Oregon. Where there are no cameras on the beaches, and
probably never will be. (Heck! There isn't even any sales tax up here.
Folks here resist a whole lot of crapola that other states have swallowed
hook, line, and sinker. And if you think a drum circle is great in smog
and traffic wait till you get a chance to experience one on a natural beach
surrounded by forest. And as for police ticketing sisters for going topless
down there on the S.Cal beaches don't forget that in Eugene Oregon it is
legal for a woman to be topless anywhere in the city. And there are many
beaches on the ocean in Oregon that allow total nudity, without any molestation
by police. Not to mention that wilderness hotsprings, MacCredie, Cougar,
Umpqua, Bagby, Owyhee, etc where nudity is totally permissable and the
Forest Service actually puts up signs on the hotsprings hiking trails reminding
people to put their clothes back on before they get in sight of a public
road. Needless to say, some of the greatest drumcircles immaginable happen
in these places. Sooooooo -- Have fun all you California brothers and sisters,
and continue your struggle for freedom and spirit. But if you ever really
need a refuge in which to nourish that freedom and spirit just pack up
your drums and head north.

The Venice Beach Drum Circle *****By Bruce Shutan***** *****©
2002 Bruce Shutan. All rights reserved The drum circle phenomenon is playing
out across America, but nowhere is the scene as riveting as it is on L.A.'s
Venice Beach, where drummers, dancers and spectators have been gathering
on weekends for some 50 years. The Venice Beach Drum Circle fosters a multi-cultural
sound and primal energy captured on "Harmonious Mayhem/Absolutely Live,"
a 39-minute CD sold on the VBDC Web site (www.venicebeachdrumcircle.com)
whose title says it all about the blessing and curse of open drums circles.
Beginners usually provide the backbeat and rhythm, while more skilled players
improvise and solo, observes Joseph Hernandez Tiu, an architect who has
been drumming at the VBDC since moving to Venice about five years ago.
One problem, he says, is when too many drummers show up and pound out multiple
rhythms as loud as they can without listening to one another. The VBDC
"is a little bit like the Mulligan Stew people made in the Great Depression,"
adds Marc Madow, whose documentary about the Venice Beach Boardwalk devotes
39 of its 67 minutes to the VBDC. "There are some talented regulars who
drum in a way that inspires others into certain musical places. But because
there are always new visitors to the drum circle you get interesting new
sounds and sights to blend with." The VBDC includes musicians who've performed
with Santana and the Jefferson Airplane, according to Madow. What's also
worth noting is how many people bring homemade instruments. "One guy shows
up with a piece of metal salvaged from a demolished building," he says,
"while another guy has a piece of textured brass." Drummers flock to the
VBDC because of the surf, sand and, of course, sweet sounds that balance
improvisation with basic beats. "For musical adventure," Madow believes,
"the unlicensed, unregulated, un-elected, not FDA approved, absolutely
free VBDC is the game." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was told this was coming, I guess it was sooner than later...Better
keep your tops on!!!***Los Angeles Beaches Are Coming Under Surveillance.
Why? By Sharon Waxman Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, April 28, 2002;
Page F01 VENICE BEACH, Calif. -- Once upon a time, the beach was a place
where bare feet met sand, sand met surf, water touched sky and you felt
blissfully alone even when surrounded by thousands of barely clad, coconut-oil-slathered
others. In Southern California the sand, surf and sky are still there,
but the feeling of being alone -- that's about to disappear. Malibu, Santa
Monica, Venice, El Segundo, Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo -- the beaches
that practically invented bohemian sun-worship and hang-ten hedonism --
are soon to be placed under the watchful eye of 24-hour-a-day, 360-degree-view
cameras. Thank you, Uncle Sam. Using a new federal grant of $557,000, Los
Angeles County has announced it will install 27 panoramic, wide-angle cameras
along 72 miles of coastline over the next year. With them, lifeguard monitors
at the Fire Department (they're in charge of L.A. beaches) will, among
other things, be able to make sure they have adequate staffing at secluded
locations. The monitors will also send the images to Web sites, where the
public will be able to check weather, beach, crowd and parking conditions
via still images that will be updated every five minutes. The grant comes
from a Clinton-era program called Technology Opportunities, aimed at using
the Internet for communal good. Hence, says the county's press release:
"A stated goal of the program is to reach out to inland communities and
allow them to plan a trip to the beach with as much ease as someone living
with a view of the water." But the byproduct is the government watching
while Californians tan. So, surveillance at the beach: A public service?
Or something insidious? The county says it's entirely the former. The public
will get up-to-the-minute information about California swimming holes.
Environmentalists will get new data on "coastal erosion." Lifeguards will
know where crowds are heaviest. The cameras do not record, officials say
-- at least not yet. Private areas of the beach, like homes and restrooms,
will be blacked out. The cameras will be fixed in place -- typically, atop
the lifeguard tower, maybe two stories high -- and unable to zoom. Images
of people will be blurry, and even gender will be difficult to decipher
(unlike the planned D.C. surveillance system, which would be able to distinguish
individuals). And the county promises to place signs warning beachgoers
of the presence of cameras. "If anything, we're improving on the privacy
issue," says L.A. County Lifeguard Chief Mike Frazer, who notes the presence
of privately owned cameras elsewhere on the coast. He's frankly tired of
fielding questions about the matter and has started ducking the media.
"We're going to divert [the images] to our free, public system." If the
cameras ever were used to identify individuals, he says, "we would lose
our funding." Still, suspicions have been aroused. "It concerns me," says
Elizabeth Schroeder, associate director of the American Civil Liberties
Union of Southern California. "I can understand why the city thinks it
will be a public benefit. It has attempted to place privacy restrictions
in . . . But there are serious problems with having public spaces widely
covered by cameras, and putting the public under surveillance." The problem,
as she puts it, is "function creep." Sure the cameras don't record now,
she says, sure they won't be able to identify individuals now. But what
about next year, and the year after that? "We know that once the technology
is in place, it's not going to be very difficult to upgrade these cameras
to have far greater capability," she says. "Having someone else pay to
upgrade the cameras is a lot less money, and it may be picked up by another
government agency that sees a crime-fighting benefit." Schroeder doesn't
have a problem with crime-fighting per se, but she cites a new study that
found that cameras installed by the government in public places in Great
Britain were frequently used by those monitoring them for voyeuristic purposes.
Hmmm, voyeurism on the beach, not exactly a rarity. But the problem is
more subtle than that, perhaps. To some beachgoers, surveillance cameras
would somehow change the very essence of what it means to go to the beach.
"You don't think of yourself as being watched when you're down there,"
says Chad Nelson, an official with the Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit
group for surfers. He considers what surfing-under-a-lens might be like.
"It's kind of interesting. There are cameras everywhere now. We live with
them at the ATM, at 7-11." Pause. "I guess it's okay. The Big Brother aspect
is just pretty, mmm, interesting." Nelson knows -- as most beachgoers probably
don't -- that there already are many cameras eyeing the sand. A company
called Surfline.com has cameras perched up and down both coasts, providing
real-time images of water conditions to surfers who subscribe to the service.
Another company called Argus has cameras set up to monitor waves and beach
data for environmental restoration projects. Beachgoers are not singled
out, but they are certainly visible on these webcasts. TV stations have
also had cameras facing the water for years. Next to the county's dome-shaped,
off-white camera up on the roof of Frazer's Venice Beach lifeguard lair
(it's not yet hooked up, but it's ready to go) is a large camera belonging
to the local NBC affiliate, used for weather reports for the past decade.
That camera, Frazer points out, has a zoom lens. But Schroeder argues that
it's quite different when the government is in charge. Information mixed
with power -- that, she says, is the essence of Big Brother. "There's a
qualitative difference when it's the government," she says. "The government
is pervasive. It's not like going into a liquor store, and if you don't
want to be on camera, you don't go in the store. You have no option but
to walk public streets." And even with privately owned cameras at the beach,
the lure to use them for other purposes has proved irresistible. In Palos
Verdes, south of Los Angeles, Nelson's group is using a Surfline camera
not to check the waves but to monitor and record fistfights between the
local surfers and rival visitors. "If there's a crime, it might be negligent
not to look for that," Nelson speculates. Meanwhile, Schroeder's fear of
"function creep" may be more immediate than she realizes. In its press
release, the county notes: "Presently, there are no mechanisms in place
to video record," but leaves open the possibility of "very limited recording"
of rescues at sea or large swells. Schroeder sees the next step -- clearer
images and more recording -- as not far behind. "They may have the best
of intentions. But they can't stop it once it does happen. It's almost
inevitable, with basic equipment in place," she said. And down at Venice
Beach, lifeguard captain Shannon Carr-Davey has her own expectations, no
matter how blurry the images are supposed to be. "Don't worry," she says,
when asked about the installation timetable for the cameras. "Everyone
still has time to lose weight and pick out their new bathing suits." ©

Hi, There is a book that teaches drummers how to play and understand
Quinto licks, used in Rumba. The Quinto language can be very illusive and
a lot of drummers who love to speak, have trouble with their phrasing.
This book can help drummers to understand the syncopated language. From
this book drummers learn to understand where and when quinto "licks begin
and end. Once a drummer understands how to listen to licks, then he/she
can teach his/herself to can go to open rumbas and actually understand
what quinteros are "saying". Once a drummer can understand another drummer,
learning can really take place. This book helps people to start to understand
the Afro Cuban Conga Drum Impovisation language. The name of this book
is: Rumba Afro Cuban Conga Drum ImprovisationThis book is not meant to
take the place of a teacher but it will enhance the ability of drummers
to learn and grow whether with a private teacher or teachers (drummers
who are playing) at open rumbas. To read about more about the method book:http:/banchops.commy

ok fellow brothers of the drum i am getting a little bit frusttrated
with the recent beats ive heard at the sacred circle on venice. everyone
seems to have this "one" rhythm stuck in their head and it keeps repeating
over and over every week every month i just wish this beat would go away.
i think you know what beat i am talking about some have called it the manuell
beat or whatever but i am sure you have heard it cause it goes almost nonstop
these days. ok peace and respect to all we just need to change things up

As Spring progresses and we get ready for bountiful harvests, it is
time to be thankful for all the beautiful gifts Nature has provided. Also,
the Internet and email have given us the opportunity to share beautiful
insights as never before possible. The story following this short letter
is one of the most memorable lately, about hearing one's inner song. To
begin this next Full Moon, we will celebrate Rising from the Ashes Drum,
Dance & Music Circle on Friday, April 26, 2002, at Malibu Phoenix starting
at 4 PM [early meditation at Vortex] followed by the Vegan [raw is highly
encouraged] Potluck [6 PM - on] and then the Ceremony [7 PM - 10 PM - later
if it's warm enough in the meadow]. This interactive circle is created
to "tap into" elemental energies, and honor our abilities to rise above
the challenges of our past experiences. Collectively, it is a real charge
for our systems. Many testimonials have been written describing the healing
these types of circles facilitate. ShamanicAstrology.com writes about this
auspicious day: Apr 26, Friday. The Full Moon in Scorpio is a highly charged
experience of raw, primal life force energy enlivening passion, magic,
personal power, and manifestation. The intent of the Scorpio mysteries
is to feel the increased power of life force as it manifests into form.
The fullest experience for Scorpio in this reality comes from living on
the edge, discovering personal passion and what feels most alive. A helpful
mantra for this time is forgive, shed, release, surrender, accept, and
transform. My wish is for humans to use this powerful time to really envision
a lasting peace for all races living harmoniously and people to not forget
our Sacred Mother Earth. Let's really let her know how we feel by showing
her we really care about her creations, of which we are a part. Participate
in your local Earth Day Celebrations. We have numerous events in the works
here, and will keep you posted as they are scheduled. Love & Light,

Dear Ones, Thursday, March 28, 2002, 4 PM - 10 PM, is the first Full
Moon, Passing Over, after the beginning of Spring. Many beautiful flowers
are in bloom with enough rain for Nature to be shining in Her Glorious
Radiance. The Wild Ones are rejoicing with all the lush vegetation and
aliveness that this Season has to offer. The air is fragrantly fresh. It's
time to celebrate Rising from the Ashes, an interactive, mostly unplugged,
Monthly Full Moon Drum, Dance, Music & Celebration, designed to allow
each one attending, regardless of religious, ethnic or racial background,
to express themselves in a most fun way. No two events are alike, and this
one will definitely be outside around a fire [pending approval from Fire
Dept.] unless it's raining, when we take it indoors to the Lodge with a
fireplace. Please tell your friends, as the group energy helps us recharge
and heal wounds which have happened from both recent events, and lifetimes.
Whether you make it to this circle, create, or attend your own, my wish
is for this to be a significant time that we use to constructively dedicate
ourselves for a better re-awakening of our divine purpose. Please feel
free to call or write with questions, suggestions, or if you are considering
booking a date for your own program or wedding. Just scroll down for more
information & directions. Love & Light, Dennis "Three Eagles" 310-589-2768

I found a listing online for another drum circle, LA Happenings on
Dockweiler Beach. I went to check it out a couple months ago, but didn't
find any drum circle. I was wondering if you might know something about
it? Maybe it's only in the summer, or maybe it's long defunct. I have heard
of a drum circle way up in Sherman Oaks. This one is definitely Middle
Eastern rhythm, info can be found at Mesmera's Current Belly Dance Events
- International Bellydancer and Middle Eastern Dance Star . I've never
been so I don't know what the atmosphere is like. I love the Venice Beach
drum circle but I'm a bellydancer and would really LOVE to find a drum
circle (preferably outside, unlike the one above) with a focus on Middle
Eastern rhythms. Sincerely, Sari

On Dream Invaders....... thinking about the Thurston Highschool massacre
and the intimidating forces that worm their way in between children and
their parents, especially the forces that work in dreams. Warlock stuff.
The mental agents who learned how to meditate their way into other people's
minds and dreams. No text books discuss them. People are called schizophrenic
if they "hear voices". But those darth vadar meditators exist. I wonder
sometimes where they got their powers. Maybe it started in the ancient
days when the Druids partook of the Amanita Muscaria mushroom and mixed
potents of Amanita Muscaria for all the people of all the clans during
the Beltane ceremonies. Human dreams originate in the cave of antiquity
where the family slept together and their minds were freed to join together
in harmony at night. Shaman used this energy benevelantly in Beltane ceremonies
for milleniums. But those were matristic days, and the dreams were born
of Mother nourishing traditions, cultures. The drunken patriarchal Kurgan
cultures that overwhelmed the world had no need of family healing dreams
aligning against them. So they learned to inject themselves inside them
with malevelance and intimidation. And they became "priests" of that system.
Those secret priests carry down to our society today, invading dreams,
separating family hearts in the night, making chaos and insanity. Drum
circles are healing because the constant rhythms drive out the evil powers
from the minds. Those powers are incredibly active in society! Music of
the right kind is capable of "soothing the savage beast", quieting the
evil brainwaves. You see poor crazy people walking along streets talking
to themselves. They are talking to the shitsuckers of the mind that have
taken their heart away. Probably destroyed their families. That is their
purpose of course. To destroy marriages and turn children against parents
and make people want to go out and do evil things to each other. When that
happens the evil priests of the mind have succeeded. We need to return
our hearts and minds to the ancient cave/dream harmony, free of influences
of chaos.

Hello. My name is Jose Duenas and I am the Education Director for the
Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club. We have been interested in hosting a

been settled, but I wanted to find the facilitator and work with this person
on the date and time of event. I am also part of the L.A. River Center

Abandon all present thoughts and concentrate on this...... There are
moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick
them from your dreams and hug them for real! When the door of happiness
closes, another opens, but often times we look so long at the closed door
that we don't see the one which has been opened for us. Don't go for looks;
they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone
who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem
bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile. Dream what you want to
dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have
only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. May you
have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong,
enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy. The happiest
of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make
the most of everything that comes along their way. Love begins with a smile,
grows with a kiss and ends with a tear. The brightest future will always
be based on a forgotten past, you can't go on well in life, until you let
go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying
and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die,
you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Hello Friends, We are calling all Whale Lovers to join us this next week
(2/12- 2/18) for Whale Day to celebrate the whales and other marine life.
Many new threats are endangering our beloved whales including: a May 22nd
International Whaling Commission meeting in Japan where a vote to reinstate
whale hunting could occur. Even with protection, over 21,000 whales have
been killed since the moratorium on whaling began in 1986. In addition,
whales are facing threats from Low Frequency Active Sonar (LFAS), loss
of habitat, and ocean pollution. Help us end whaling and other threats,
by participating in Whale Day events or by going to our web site: www.whaleday.com

January sure knows how to put on a show for us sky gazers and romantics
at heart. Everytime I see clouds marching along the horizon, I like to
pretend heaven is having a parade with each puff of cloud a parade float
'floating' along behind the next one. And the puffs of clouds above them
are balloons lagging behind and sometimes you see a float breaks down and
they jam up and run into each other. And the errant little specks in the
sky trailing are the parade horse's shit left behind for the next sunset
to cleanup...ok, this has been a drug free sunset daydream brought to you

Dear Ones, This Sunday, 1-27-2002, "Rising from the Ashes", that starts
with quiet meditation at 4pm near the Vortex, will be followed by a Full
Moon Circle in the Lodge, rain or shine, with a hot fireplace. The Drumming
probably will not start until, 7pm., except for the very talented Woodpeckers
along with Nature's Chorus, which is always a unique presentation of song
and dance. Even with a gentle rain, it is such a joy to be in the presence
these wonderful performers. Dress accordingly & in layers, as it is
usually cooler in the Canyon than by the coast. For more information about

My birthday is on Feb. 2nd, I will be turning 18. A couple of Sundays
ago, while at the drum circle, my mom and I decided that what would be
a better place to have a birthday party then at the Drum Circle. So on
Sunday Feb. 3rd we are going to bring balloons and some sort of yummy treats
down to the Drum Circle so that I can spend my birthday doing what I love
and with people who will equally enjoy the fun.. What do you guys think?
I am really looking forward to it now. I think that there will be a lot

opinions of your very touching entry. I moved to Venice Beach and to the

spiritual and otherwise that radiate from the beating of the drums!

Danielle, your words are magical. That is the one word that encompasses
all the positive things about the Venice Beach Drum Circle - it is truly
magical, and it is a wonder that this life of ours and this world we live
in with all it's faults and tragedies do have a few pockets of surprises
and magic if you know where to look. And if your life is in need of a little
magic (or a whole mouthful), you can find it where the sun sets everyday
- at the Venice Beach Drum Circle! Come all and share not just in life,
but in the magic of life itself. As a friend/veteran of the drum circle,
Jay once said "...The circle is a church, for afterall, what people of
all religion seek out in church will find at the drum circle..."

I have been going to Venice Beach my entire life, which is almost 18
years. I've seen all the shows and been in all the shops. About a year
ago, I started going over to the drum circle. I love to dance more then
anything in the world, so hearing the raw beats and sounds of the drums
sent me into a state of bliss. I would stand around the cirlce moving my
head to the beat or tapping my foot, but I couldn't bring myself to jump
into the middle of the circle. That is until one day when my mom dragged
me in. We ended up dancing for over an hour and I never had so much fun
in my life. Dancing in the Drum Circle is now something that I try to do
atleast once a month, if not every Sunday. My mom and I are a team there;
we jump into the center of the circle, dance for hours, and leave emotionally
and physically content. I love the feeling of shaking and moving my hips
to the beat of the drummers. Nothing in life gives me more spiritual pleasure
then dancing my little heart out. And knowing that other people share the
same feeling is wonderful. I feel at home in the center of that circle
with all of my friends. Friends who I don't even have to know the name
of, but I feel so connected to. Friends who aren't judgemental or materialistic,
atleast in the moment. I feel closer to some of those people then I do
people that I have known for years. The Drum Circle is magical. It is where
my mom and I go to escape life. We went today as well as last Sunday. We
were talking about how while you're in the circle, you just forget everything.
Your mind is blank and all the worries of life seem to disappear. You are
at one with the sun, the sky, the water, with earth. And it's a great workout
lol. I shake my butt off and as I sit here typing this, I am one sore girl
:) but it is definitely worth it. And I will be back next Sunday.

The holidays are over with all their rigamarole. I feel like I was
a party-pooper this year. Really, usually I rather appreciate the spirit
of Christmas and NewYears. Just that this year, with bad teeth and limited
finances they felt dreary and I figured their timing was off. Maybe if
they could have held up Christmas and NewYears until July I would have
felt better about them. But there is no changing tradition. I mean people
get set in their ways about such things you know. They got to have their
Christmas at the end of December and they got to have their New Year on
the first of January. There is no talking to them. They make up their minds
to one way of doing things and they aren't about to change. I mean, you
stop and think about it, the whole country weren't really ready to have
a Christmas at this time, much less a New Year. There was the jets smashing
into the World Trade Center towers on September eleventh, just three months
earlier and the consequent war against the Afghanistan Taliban. All the
people dying then. Not just dying. Dying implies natural causes, old age.
People being "killed", their lives cut short. All the people in the towers,
in the jets. All the people who got the Anthrax. All the people in Afghanistan
with the bombs falling upon them... What kind a time is that to have a
Christmas? I mean, Christmas ain't about any of that stuff. It is a whole
different thing you know? I mean in what Bible did anyone ever read: "If
thy neighbor should explode you with mountains of gasoline fire take thee
dynamite in quantities one million fold and pour forth upon thy neighbor
until thy neighbor lies entirely dead in his crumbled fortresses." It would
make more sense to our minds if the Bible DID say that. Our nation has
cried out for retribution and vengeance and we have obtained it. But that
is beside the point. The point being that nothing in the Bible indicates
Christianity should have anything to do with such opinions. So there we
are celebrating Christmas in the middle of it. They should simply have
moved Christmas up to mid July and New Years up to say June first. It would
have been a small thing. Sure it would have messed with the sacred cow
of their traditions. But what good is a tradition that does not make sense?
Some things don't mix. You don't prepare an altar of peace and stack corpses
of dead children on it. These are two distinct and separate things. Christmas
was not pleasant for me this year. I skipped it entirely. I myself may
celebrate it this coming July though. If you would care to join me, with
a few friends, I am sure we will have a wonderful day. As for New Year,
so far it still FEELS like the the same old year we just had. I am not
sure I am ready to call it a new one yet. Maybe we should hold off New
Year until we see how Christmas goes this coming July. If it goes well,
we could start our New Year a little late about then. What do you think?

In response Rachael's message dated November 29, 2001, I would argue
that drum circles, and more broadly music events in general, certainly
can help "bring peace, understanding, compassion and tolerance to the world."
This is not to say that music can relieve all suffering or solve all problems.
Sometimes what people need is not music, but rather food, shelter, or political
or social reform. Music is, however, a potentially powerful tool in reaching
people, not only to distract them for a moment from their extra-musical
troubles, but also to address those troubles -- to draw individuals together
and to encourage reform. Musicians and audiences may feel that music provides
them with a release and healing. Music itself, furthermore, may call for
reform, or musicians, in addition to performing and enjoying music, also
may work to provide their audiences with non-musical necessities. Music
perhaps should not only be the end, but it sometimes can serve as a beginning.
Indeed, one beauty of music is its ability to function and to affect participants
in a multiplicity of ways. Venice Beach Drum Circle participants seem to
be drawn to the circle for differing reasons, and seem to take from it
different experiences. That not all individuals are attracted to the circle
for the same reason, and that some are not attracted to it at all, does
not diminish its significance.

MAMA BARES....Greetings! We want to ask you these questions: 1)Why
haven't organic and sustainable farming practices been established in the
US? 2)Why have genetically engineered crops been allowed to pollute our
nation's food chain? 3)Why does the US Government subsidize the Beef Industry
when that money could feed twenty times more people using vegetarian diets?
4)If Marijuana has been the biggest cash crop in the US for the last twenty
years, why is it still illegal? 5)Why can't US Farmers grow hemp? 6)Since
millions of Americans want THC on a daily basis, why isn't the US Government
making it available in a safely administered-healthy-non-smoke form? 7)Why
haven't Hydrogen Power and other alternative energy sources been implemented
into our transportation and energy needs? These are some of the important
issues that will effect the lives of our children.--We want answers!--Become
a MamaBare!--In order to bring attention to these issues, the MamaBares
are holding a Rally on Saturday, December 8th, 2001 at the Free Speach

The enjoyment of Venice Beach is not restricted to only tourists and
counterculture people. Several months ago I read an Associated Press story
about President Ronald Reagan and the fact that he could no longer leave
his home because of his health. The story went on to say that the last
place that President Reagan was able to go to and enjoy was Venice Beach.
I thought how unfortunate it was that he could not go there to enjoy the
both the traditional entertainment as well as the new boardwalk features
which had just been completed by the city. I came up with an idea to send
some of Venice Beach to President Reagan and his family. I sent them a
copy of our Venice Beach video in care of President Reagan's staff in his
Century City office. If you can't bring the President to Venice Beach why
not bring Venice Beach to the President? This is America where we can do
almost anything right? Anyway, I got a beautiful thank you letter from
President Reagan's Chief of Staff, Joanne Drake and I feel like sharing
it here. On official Office of Ronald Reagan letterhead with official seal
it states; Dear Mr. Madow: On behalf of President and Mrs. Reagan, thank
you for your kind letter and your entertainment documentary, Venice Beach.
I have sent the videotape to President and Mrs. Reagan and I am certain
they will enjoy watching the film. (New Paragraph) Again, President and
Mrs. Reagan asked me to convey to you their very best wishes and sincere
appreciation for your thoughtfulness. Sincerely, Joanne Drake, Chief of
Staff. ( To view a scan of the original letter just click; http://ww2.ddyne.com/brokencamera/reagan.jpg
) I personally found it very satisfying to perhaps bring some pleasure
to President Reagan in his senior years. I want to thank all of the people
who were filmed along the boardwalk for being there to help make our "video
postcard" of Venice Beach so enjoyable. This especially goes to the drummers
and dancers of the Venice Beach Drumcircle. Thank you. Thank you.

Nuts! An acquaintance of mine was going on about how illiterate Afghanistan
has become under the Taliban and how wonderful it is that now finally their
schools may be reopened and hopefully this terrible experience may be put
behind them. The hijackers though were educated men. Some were attending
colleges. All could read and write. What gets me is the way some of the
hijackers went into a strip club in Florida the evening of September 10th
and stayed there drinking the whole evening, being entertained by the women,
and then as they left, angrily saying "Wait until tomorrow!" The Taliban
remind me of our Puritans. Our Puritans in Salem burned people at the stake
basically because they enjoyed dancing nude in the woods and kissing each
other in odd places. The group nudity is what really griped the Puritans.
All their books and learning were of no avail to them, for their main directive
told them people who danced nude in the woods needed to be burned alive.
Replacing the Afghanni's school system won't teach them any worthwhile
intelligence in itself, any more than it did the Puritans. They need first
to understand basic right and wrong. Our finest books will ultimately only
teach them the science of airplanes and rockets and nuclear physics and
germ warfare, all of which their twisted souls hunger for. They need some
straitening out first. So I wrote a poem. NUTS! Go get nanny, Spank their
fanny Bad Afghanni Talibani Tell your bunny Its not funny Laden's money

"Could drum circles help bring peace, understanding, compassion and
tolerance to the world?" Wouldn't it be lovely if it could? From what I
have seen written in this localized geography drumming has been the instrument
to breaking down barriers. But as the world learned on the eve of the French
Revolution in 1789, a "smile" was not enough to bring about a Utopic society.
They believed that if all could be analyzed with reason and science then
there would be no more suffering, no more war. In much the same way as
reason and science is the solution in some situation, nor would music,
drumming, art, or any other ideal ever be realized as the solution. I don't
know what the answers are. Oh, and by the way, sometime I'd really like
to see this drum circle.

I felt the need to share this with all of you from the heart. Let me
just say that in this material world when people are helping others in
the mode of goodness such as holding wonderful Coummunity Drum Circles
at Venice Beach, you will find that at least one person can be envious
and say things to hurt you, but little do they know and understand that
the hearing aspects of drumming and the transcedental sound vibrations
can only purify their heart. Here is what I found with regards to the "HEALING
ASPECTS" of the Venice Beach Drum Circle and HOW seriously it HELPED others
from the L.A. Times. Los Angeles Times Article Sondra Tatum moved to Venice
Beach three years ago from the San Fernando Valley hoping the nearness
of the ocean would help speed her recovery from surgery. On the days she
was too sick to climb down the flight of stairs from her second-floor apartment
to the beach, she would position herself at the window to feel the sea
breeze on her face and listen to the drums. Nearly every weekend for the
last 50-odd years, the drummers have come. They come together for as many
reasons as there are drums in the Venice Beach Drum Circle, and the members
who number anywhere from 30 in winter to 100 in summer have shifted over
the years. But always they come. Tatum does not play the drums, yet the
46 year-old advertising sales manager was steadily drawn in by the circle's
spirit of freedom and inclusion. Nor is her devotion unique. Nearly every
weekend, John Camarena, 69, a retired barber and reverend with World Christian
Ministries, drives in from Azusa to pound his bass drum, because "it takes
away my tiredness, the loneliness, the old age." And 30-something Emily
Sharbania moved here from San Francisco because "even when I come here
down and exhausted, the collective energy elates me." But not everything
is love and harmony by the sea. Complaining about the noise level, some
beach-side residents are trying to shut down the circle. Eileen Hagen,
40, an online auctioneer who last year bought a home two blocks from the
staging area, knew about the drum circle when she and her husband moved
in. But, she says, "we assumed they would be treated the same as a loud,
rowdy party." Instead, she says, "all we hear for 10 hours straight is
TA-TA-TA-TA. So, we can't keep our windows open; we can't use our decks;
we can't do anything other than try to get the police to do their jobs."
Steve Schlein, a 60-year-old former public defender who has lived in the
area for 26 years, says the drum circle noise has escalated to the point
that "often, I can feel the drums' vibration in my floor." Still, he says,
his repeated complaints to the police have been ignored. "The police have
caved in; they have simply abandoned the residents of Venice," he says.
Los Angeles Police Capt. Gary Williams, whose Pacific Division patrols
the area, counters that the issue is not simply whether the noise created
by the drums violates city noise ordinances. "In a vacuum, that may be,"
he says. "But this is Venice Beach, one of the world's largesttourist attractions,
with numerous entertainers, musicians, traffic and noise from up to 150,000
visitors a day. So, the question becomes, is drum circle noise so significant
that it rises above everything else?" To support the drummers, Tatum has
set up a table on weekends at which she has collected more than 5,000 signatures
from local residents and visitors from all over the world. She has also
launched a Web site to broaden her support base. "It's a spiritual release,
communicating without words," says Joseph Tiu, 38, of the drum circle.
Tiu once gave away his boyhood drums "to go to college and become a responsible
adult." Now an architect, Tiu realized that responsible adulthood could
never compete with the "rush" of drumming. So, he moved to Venice and now
drums for up to eight hours a day. "It's primal," he says. Maybe too primal.
Noise, neighbors say, is not the only issue. Add to it the drugs and violence
that sometimes occur at the circle's periphery and things may get out of
control. Williams has tried to mediate the dispute, on a recent weekend
assigning up to three vehicles to park near the drummers to keep the peace.
He has also negotiated a compromise in which the drummers move away from
the boardwalk, toward the ocean during most of the afternoon. What's at
stake amid all this, says filmmaker Marc Madow, who recently spent six
months filming "Venice Beach," a documentary that focuses primarily on
the drummers, is the survival of "something unique in the world." Most
drum circles, he says, are facilitated by a lead person, who signals the
drummers when to start and stop, and when to speed the rhythm. Drawing
from L.A.'s multiethnic background, however, the leaderless Venice circle
is totally free-spirited, with three basic rhythms: Middle Eastern, African
and Latin. The circle also breaks down social barriers, Madow says. He
has filmed a 70-plus woman dancing and playing a tambourine, as well as
an obese woman, who elsewhere might have been intimidated, "holding hands
with another girl and dancing unself-consciously. At the circle, people
forget their class, their status, their limitations," he says. Judith Penchansky,
a 54-year-old Santa Monica College administrator who has owned her home
half a block from where the drummers meet since 1972, admits the issue
is not black and white. A former neighbor and friend is part of the drum
circle. "I can see how one group appreciates this as music, while the other
thinks of it as noise," she says. Still, "neither group is going away.
So we have to somehow learn to live together. We have to learn to compromise.
That's the lesson here."

The aforementioned email - "Please. Spare me your musical posing. I've
no doubt that this 'breakthrough' album that you're so desperately shilling
with your online spam is little more than a group of white boys (and girls)
pretending to be talented. You are a loser." sent by a disgruntled supposedly
'spammed" East-Coaster probably doesn't deserve the attention it's getting,
but I am inclined to comment not on the emails particulars per se, but
more on some broader and pertinent issues - some of which relates to some
'new world understanding' in light of terrorismsí resurgence in the media
and the realization again that there are angry/crazy/beyond help/and yes
dangerous people out there. One issue is that there are certain people
who take gratification in being 'angry' at the world/group of individuals/or
directed at anonymous harmless alleged spammers. These are the types who
elicit some form of reaction from the masses to feed their hunger for anger
and hatred. It is like the air that they breathe ? they need it to survive
or to justify in their own heads their meager existence in this world.
Like the monsters of science fiction or comic books who feed off of other
peopleís fears or absorbs laser blasts, these individuals ëget offí of
eliciting angry reactions from others. In this case, fighting anger with
more anger is not constructive and will probably perpetuate into a senseless
cycle. Donít get me wrong, the war on terrorism, in my opinion is a debatable
necessary evil, and is not a case of fighting violence with more violence.
On the contrary, what the Sept. 11 attacks achieved by the terrorist was
not by all accounts constructive to their cause in any way. It was originally,
I presume, perpetuated to elicit fear in the US so that we would no longer
support Israel - that we would crawl and cower under a rock and let the
rest of the world go on killing and annihilating each other without our
intervention. In fact, it only achieved for them, their own demise and
made their ëenemyí stronger with more resolve. The violence directed at
the Taliban on the other hand is constructive to the whole worldís cause
by eliminating/reducing the terroristsí power to do more harm in the future.
That particular violence is achieving a logical end justifying the means.
The other broader and more abstract issue is something I vaguely remember
being discussed in Philosophy class at UCLA which I took as a break to
try and break my physics-burn-out syndrome. The subject involved the philosophical
dilemma of ëthe problem of other mindsí I remember it being called. From
what I can remember, it discusses the idea that all of us, weather of sound
mind or not, are only directly aware of our own thought. We all think of
ourselves as ëmoralí and ërightí in everything we do relatively speaking,
and possessing a conscience. Therefore, theoretically, a world full of
these good intentioned individuals shouldnít have to deal with any evil
in the world. But there is the problem of other minds beyond the ëselfí.
One can only account and control for oneís own actions, and yet there are
these entities that exist beyond this control, and therefore the utopia
of a perfect world disintegrates. Itís been awhile so if I stated that
subject inaccurately or incorrectly, please, I welcome any corrections
or additions to this subject. One movie that delves into this subject matter
is A Clockwork Orange by the late great Stanley Kubrick. Mother nature
gave us the gift of individuality and consciousness ? to do good or evil.
It is a gift and a right, but without itís ugly consequences when abused
to take away that right from others. I realize that this may seem ëout
thereí as a message on a message board, and that I am responding to that
email mentioned above directly. I am merely using that email as an excuse
to voice something that I have been thinking about recently, as a way of
trying to make some sense out of many senseless acts going on around us.
My hope is that it may give light and definition to why such senseless
acts exists around us ? be it ramming a plane into a building full of innocent
people, or emailing an angry letter meant to feed oneís own love of itís
own hate of others. Agreed, the world would be a better place without them,
but they are here with us to stay. Theyíll always be some form of them
in our imperfect world. We must learn to accept that fact and try to keep
them at bay, no matter how hard, and to keep living a life balanced by
beauty and love. Keep the fateÖSirus out.

Praise God who is the Life in us all, Amen. I have participated in
the drum circle. Its starts out all right, then the police come and move
it all out onto sand and the groove is gone. Then the groove starts and
stops. But all grooves that start end. Like the Universe. It was a groove
that Allah began many trillions of years ago. On an appointed day it will
"disintegrate in flames", as the Bible says. It was never Real. It is an
illusion maintained by Allah until an appointed day. Drums are not Real.
Rhythm is not Real. Anything created is an illusion. But you can make the
illusion you want to see. You can make the illusion you want to hear. You
can engage in the illusion of drumming. You can play what you want to hear.
But just because it feels good doesn't mean its Real, or just because it
hurts. You can sow and reap accordingly. You can do this because the Life
in you is God who is the master of all illusion, all creation, all duality,
all rhythm. Duality is rhythm. One - Two, One - Two. Rhythm. Male - Female,
War - Peace, Love - Hate. Rhythm. But all rhythm will come to an end on
an Appointed Day, then there will be Void. Judgement Day it has been called.
On that Day Allah will tell you what you did. I thank you Most High for
telling me what i did in THIS life. I thank you for all that you have taught
me. I thank you for letting me drum to the extent that you have. I thank
you that the Life in me is You, Amen.

The drum circle at Venice Beach is one of the few raw cultural experiences
we have left inSouthern California. It's spontaneous, live art in motion
and sound, all walks of life and cultures can participate. Regulating and
limiting it can only destroy the sponteneity of it. Drum circles say something
to the world, they are human expression through art and music. Our society
needs them to express itself in these trying times.

First of all, I don't know why this person calls you a loser, and what
that even is ? I presume he meant looser, what would be pathetic considering
the poor grammar. Nevertheless I could not find anything in this gentlemen's
e-mail that I would categorize as "Attack" or being "attacked", although
according to Oxford definitions, you are absolutely right. It's jut that
,taking from my own experience, I do not feel attacked by criticism of
such kind, and never will I respond to such idiotic comment in a form of
a commercialized propaganda novel that's sounds towards the end like an
infomercial of the Garden Weasel. In my opinion the guy who sent you this
critic is an idiot, probably sexually deranged, father of 3, and an honorable
sunday church visitor, wanna bet ? This is my honest opinion and not an
attack. I consider you one of my annoying friends and I appreciate you.
Therefor I'm extremely open, as one of my friendship philosophies. Don't
be so sensitive, put your leader jacket and your cheep sunglasses on and
care less about those slime-bags. If someone likes drums and the Drumcircle,
that's fine with me, and all power to them. If some one hates it, that's
also fine with me, and all power to them. Fuck those people ...........

I have not been to a drum circle up here in Eugene for a year or more.
I haven't even been to Umpqua hotsprings in over a year, which is the last
of the places I go where drum circle stuff could happen. My thoughts are
not keen edged at present. Here is my thoughts on the person who wrote
you the nasty note. You have done something similar to what I have done
too many times. You have written a long winded reply to his terse comment.
Intellectually that probably made you feel you had adequately retaliated.
In my opinion you should have simply inserted his post and signed it with
his name and email. Then you should have answered it in your own terse
and cogent reply which should have been preferably no longer than his.
Regretably I have rarely been wise enough to do that sort of thing myself,
and always prefer long dragged out replys. Nonetheless, the think the short
cogent reply would be the best. They are actually harder to create. They
are like a Japanese Haiku. Not easy to do. Each word, each beat of ryhthm
is important. Much more effective. Also easier on all of our brains. There
is so much thickly worded gunk on the internet that all of us cyberfreaks
are going to bed regularly with headaches. We are resorting to skimming
and seeking the general gist of things and missing a lot or most. This
letter is turning into more of the same. I gotta go. Good luck.

EVEN THE DRUMCIRCLE GETS ATTACKED!!!!! Last week I sent an upbeat eMail
to a "Gentleman" at Stanford which touted the Venice Beach Drumcircle's
sounds and invited him to visit both the Venice Beach Drumcircle and Medicine
Bow Gallery websites. He sent me back a short message almost immediately.
This extremely negative message is an excellent example of how many people
who don't really know the Drumcircle can be so absolutely misinformed.
One of the objectives of both the video and the CD was to educate the public
about just what actually goes on at the drumcircles as opposed to the rumors
that the detractors of the Drumcircle would rather have occupy people's
minds. I don't ordinarily post people's eMails which are addressed to me
into the Guestbook, however I thought this was an excellent example of
what I have to deal with sometimes. What follows is his original eMail
message with his name and eMail address withheld. Following his short message
is my not-so-short reply. I had hoped that he would respond with some kind
of comment after being written to as politely as possible about his misunderstanding.
After almost a week I have not heard back from him and presume that he
does not wish to comment. In the event that I do hear back from him in
the future I will post the comment into our Guestbook promptly. In the
meantime, I welcome anybody visiting this Guestbook to share their thoughts
about this entire situation. ORIGINAL eMail RECEIVED; "Please. Spare me
your musical posing. I've no doubt that this 'breakthrough' album that
you're so desperately shilling with your online spam is little more than
a group of white boys (and girls) pretending to be talented. You are a
loser." (Signature Witheld) RESPONSE SENT 11/10/2001; Dear Mr. (Name Witheld),
Thank you for your eMail and your thoughts. You basically made three statements
of which one is correct, one is incorrect and one is a subjective through
the eyes of the beholder type of situation. First, you stated that I am
a loser. Objectively and materialisticly that's correct, considering how
many things I have failed at so far in this lifetime. Second, you have
referred to the Venice Beach Drumcircle as ..."a group of white boys (and
girls)"...and this I would like to respectfully correct. The Venice Beach
Drumcircle which has been getting together since the 1960's is an almost
totally multiethnic group of musicians. I say almost because there are
few or no Native Americans present. Blacks, whites, hispanics, pacific
islanders, orientals, and all the other confusing labels for people are
present in large proportions, not token amounts. These musicians are unique
in the Los Angeles area in that these people of all "races" are getting
together to jam, make music and have a good time and don't let their labels
or economic strata affect their ability to drum together. You will see
low-income drummers who arrived on a bus from South Central Los Angeles
and play a pot or a pan sitting right next to a guy who parked his BMW
two blocks away and plays a twelve-hundred dollar conga. That stuff just
doesn't matter at all at the drumcircle. Even during the LA riots in 1992
these guys just kept playing together on Saturday and Sunday afternoons
leaving all that racial baggage at home. If you go to other places in LA
like the Zoo or Disneyland for example you will only see one group of people
dominating the place. The drumcircle is an absolute exception. My video
captures this situation and is an absolute documentary record of what I
say. Even Arabs and Israelis are drumming and dancing together there. Because
the drumcircle is held at the edge of the Venice Beach Boardwalk many international
visitors are exposed to the drumcircle. If you have a look at either website
you can see the many different faces which compose the drummers and dancers
of the drumcircle. Your third thought was that we are "pretending to be
talented". Well, I suppose that music and the recordings of it are truly
subjective. If I believed that you had listened to it I would simply say
that your comment was your opinion of what you have heard. I suspect that
you have not heard the CD, seen the video, or been to the drumcircle in
real life on the sands of Venice Beach. You know, Michael Jackson just
came out with a new album after a long time without new music. I read some
really stupid reviews just before it came out about how bad it was going
to be and how his career was in the rear view mirror so to speak. Then,
the album came out and it was number one in sales the first week. I've
decided not to let either of these factors affect my opinion of his new
music. I'm going to listen to it instead. This is what I would suggest
to you about forming your opinion about the Venice Beach Drummers. Not
everyone likes their drumming. Some people like them but don't agree with
my production of the CD or the video. These are very subjective things
and everyone's reaction is valid. There is no narration in the video and
some people don't like that. I wanted to stick to the sights and sounds
of a visit to the boardwalk--a video postcard so to speak. The video was
recently shown at the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival and Digital
Bearfest 2000 as the featured documentary and Canon Camera Company did
a corporate press release about the making of the video with their small
mini-DV camera. The CD is controversial because it is one long 39-minute
jam. People are used to lots of short cuts. But, that's not the way the
drumcircle plays. Instead of three or four minutes at a time they often
go twenty minutes to a couple of hours uninterrupted. So, I made a blended
track of different rhythms from nine months of drumcircles fit into a 39-minute
groove. Some people like it and some don't. Some of the drummers are just
showing up with a new drum and don't even know how to play until someone
helps them get started with a basic rhythm that they can participate with.
And other drummers have backgrounds like playing with Santana and the Jefferson
Airplane in their past. Everyone is welcome. There are no leaders and no
followers in the absolute sense much like members of the Rainbow Family.
Some drumcircles have facilitators who guide people in who will play what
rhythm and where they will sit and when to start and when to stop etcetera.
The Venice Beach Drumcircle is not like that at all and that is what is
the magic of it all. This anarchist approach makes every week a new situation
where different people and instruments show up to jam. This is a true jam.
Most of the time it works blending African sounds with Latin Rhythms and
Middle Eastern Patterns as well. Usually the mix is great. Sometimes it
doesn't work and that's that, just a bad hair day at the beach. Almost
totally absent is any influence by Native American rhythms. People from
all over the world have heard about this drumcircle and they come in all
ages from babys to eightysomethings to drum and dance together. I don't
suggest that this is a "breakthrough" album although it is the only drumcircle
CD that I am aware of. It is however an attempt to bring the feeling of
attending a live drumcircle to people who may not be able to go to one.
There are screams, whistles, and voices in several languages intertwined
with the percussion which you wouldn't have with a studio recording of
professional drummers. So.....why am I making this effort to explain all
of this to you? Because you took the time to make a comment to me it makes
you a one percenter so to speak. Most people just cruise through life daily
and simply consume. You appear to be otherwise. Writing from a Stanford
eMail address makes me think that you are either a professor or student.
This drumcircle which I have touted so highly is threatened by gentrification.
If we were all the white people which you assumed we were we might not
be in the same jam. Some new residents to the Venice Beach area don't want
the drumcircle to play anymore. They are finding noise statutes which it
possibly violates as would a little league baseball team. They are finding
there are laws about how many people can assemble without a permit which
both the drumcircle and the little league team seem to violate. We frankly
think that they are only minimally bothered by noise but are really bothered
by the multiethnic nature of our group. They don't like counterculture
people as well. We believe that they are thinking about things like real
estate values and things like that. We are having petitions signed in support
of the drumcircle and we believe that its also a first amendment issue
as well. One way we garner support is with our website and the online petition.
We also have a guestbook where people express their opinions. We also sell
videos and CDs to spread the information about exactly what we are doing
at the beach. We need as much support as possible because our detractors
are dangerous people like retired lawyers and the like. The police have
shut down the drumcircle on several occasions. We are getting publicity
in some newspapers and television news programs who are presenting our
problem to the public at large. I would be happy to meet you if you like
when I'm next in Northern California. I'd be pleased to bring a video for
you to watch and I'd be interested in your thoughts after watching the
video if you would share them with me. Ken Kesey died today and the counterculture
world has lost an important spokesman at just the wrong time. We are spawning
the seeds for real world war and the cooler heads are few and far between.
I hope that you will be open minded to my reaction to your eMail and I
thank you again for responding. Sincerely, Marc Madow MEDICINE BOW GALLERY

I visited Venice Beach in July of 2000 and was lucky enough to particpate
in a drum circle. Venice Beach has a reputation for being a very eclectic
and fun place to people watch. The street performers and the drum circles
are at the heart of this cultural richness. If drum circles are not allowed
on Venice Beach tourism will be invariably be affected. If residents can't
deal with the noise then they should move to another comunity that is less
expressive and more sheltered. Drum circles should be conducted at a reasoable
hour (mid afternoon on a weekend for example.) I was enjoyed a weekend
daytime drum circle and it was wonderful. It inspired me to learn to play
the djembe! Thank you all.

Hey all you women, Thought all you women may be interested in this
women's tribal event out in the hills of Malibu (forgive me if you aren't,
but I am just a crazy hippie type who thinks everyone should be in touch
with Nature and Mother Earth while eating vegetarian food and dancing at
wild drum circles). I went to a drum circle at this place last Sunday night.
It is a large piece of land in the Malibu hills a few miles in from the
ocean. It used to be a summer camp for surfers back in the 1950s (sorry
girls, the surfers have long since left). It is a rustic setting with a
large dirt parking lot as you enter the property. It has a large patio
area with a wall of rocks that is a waterfall, and there is also a large
pool and a jacuzzi, and an inside area with a small stage with a fireplace
and a hardwood floor for dancing, and a large assortment of hand drums.
There are hiking trails to other parts of the property that are pretty
much wild and natural. If you go, be sure to take the 5-7 minute hike over
to the Vortex area - which is a little oak tree-filled canyon with an opening
where there is a circle of logs. Sit there in the dark with your sisters
and listen to all the owls and animals around you in the trees and brush
as they talk to each other and the owls swoop down near you to take a look
at you. It is a little spooky, but the animals are a lot more afraid of
you than you are of them, and if they come close to you it is just to get
a look as they are curious about us humans as we are of them. A great place
to sit quietly and meditate. The Natives who lived in Malibu hundreds of
years ago considered it to be a sacred site. I encourage you to attend
the women's gathering to get in touch with your goddess power. You are
all Divine Earth Goddesses . . . - John (no I am not making any money from
this, and have no involvement in it - but it would be fun to see all the
women dancing to the drumming, but darn! men aren't welcome at this event)
. . . Dear Ones, It's been busy times lately -- As always, we have some
unusual and unique as well as inspirational happenings. This coming weekend,
Saturday, November 10, 2001, 6:30pm - 11:00pm, we will host a Women's Tribal
Mud Dancing Ceremony, featuring Mud from the Sea of Life in Israel [formerly
known as the Dead Sea]. Scroll down for details. On our next Full Moon,
Friday, November 30. 2001, 4pm - on, we will once again present "Rising
From the Ashes", our Meditation, Vegan Potluck, Circle, Drum. Music &
Dance Celebration. It's getting better and better. Weather-permitting,
this circle will be held in the Meadow, so dress in layers and walking
/ hiking shoes, as we are suggesting people to experience the short, 1/4
mile hike up. We will have a nice Fire Circle to warm the Spirits, and
are grateful for the rains which have moistened the ground. A shuttle will
be available to haul large objects, food, instruments, and the Physically
Challenged - or those not ready for the walk. The local Deer, Hawk, Rabbit,
Racoon, Woodpecker [great percussionists], Owl, and Lizard population will
be listening in, but we will be far enough away from neighboring humans
to go as late as we want, without complaints, because they won't be able
to hear it. This is a Divine opportunity to tune into the frequencies of
the Earth and really resonate with what is our true purpose and intent.
The Meadow area is totally "off the grid", and the natural acoustics are
phenomenal for drumming and music. We are very grateful for your patronage,
and look forward to meet all newcomers with an open heart... Love &

TRIBAL MUD DANCING CEREMONY Featuring Mud from the Sea of Life in Israel
[formerly known as the Dead Sea] Saturday, November 10, 2001, 6:30pm -
11pm at Malibu Phoenix *Live Music by Larisa Stow* Sunday, November 11
- in San Diego (6:30pm - 11pm) The Mud Divas are calling Women of all faiths
to come together in unity to celebrate and honor the sacred sisterhood.
We will focus on releasing competition between women and releasing our
own self-judgment. We will look at the judgments we make about our bodies,
becoming conscious of the ways they have hindered our love for others and
ourselves. Are you ready to move past cultural concepts of beauty to embrace
the unique expression of the feminine Spirit within you and all women?
Let your body become the prayer, the praise, and the movement that becomes
your dance of healing. Mud Divas create an atmosphere of love and acceptance,
where all bodies are beautiful and all women are remembered as Divine.
The mud symbolizes the earth from which we all came. It carries the cellular
memories of all beings from the bebinning of time. As we dance the mud
helps draw out unhealthy generational belief systems and toxins from our
bodies allowing the light within to flow more freely. Old patterns, resentment
and shame begin to fall away as we dance out the old and allow our bodies
to unfold a story of unity, joy and sisterhood. In honoring and celebrating
the Divine Feminine we begin the process of healing the Earth. Healing
has never been so much fun! Please bring a potluck dish, towel, and drum
or rattle. Suggested donation is $100 ($20 to reserve) For more information
and to register please contact Lily at 562-244-8113 (L.A. area) or Vidya

Happy Birthday to Sondra - Queen of the Venice Beach Drum Circle (aka
Mama or Jungle Woman or Wacky Website Woman -www). The whole Venice Beach
Boardwalk thanks you for your undying passion, dilligence, and energy for
the drum circle and saving it from the complainers of noise of all things
(as if there aren't more serious things to worry about). And since when
is Venice Beach Boardwalk a place of peace and quiet on the weekends? It's
a carnival/circus/playground for artist/musicians/tourist/and locals where
they can romp and play and live harmoniously. Sondra - you are the voice
and saviour for all of us who take for granted our freedom to drum. Without
you, the drum circle could have been in danger of being shut down. On behalf
of all the drummers, and even those who cannot comprehend what you have
done for them, we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Let every
beat on a drum you hear be the wishful thanks for all your hard work. Happy
Birthday to a BEAUTIFUL woman in every sense of the word. Keep on drummin'
...and of course - Love, Peace, and Drums (hugs and xoxo's to be collected
upon requests). Sirus

>From Arthur Hull: Here is the article I wrote for Drum Magazine a
few months ago. It will be the basis for the Drum Circle Etiquette chapter
of my next book. I hope this helps. Arthur Drum circle events of any kind,
are about dynamic interactive musical and personal relationships. These
relationships involved in any group rhythmical alchemy event are based
on a simple set of unwritten guide lines. When adhered to, these relationship
guide lines can help direct the group of players to their highest musical
potential. In culturally specific circles, the unwritten guide lines have
been developed through centuries of ancestral evolution. They can also
apply to any contemporary western version of a drum circle, from a "freeform"
drum jam to a facilitated community rhythm event. These unwritten musical
and personal relationship guide lines are contained within what I call
Drum Circle Etiquette. To most drum circle regulars, these guide lines
are just nonverbal agreements that everyone adheres to in order to create
a fun and exciting musical experience together. Below are my standard Drum
Circle Etiquette suggestions for playing in most community drumming environments.
Using these "Arthurian" suggestions will help you comfortably merge into
an ongoing drumming circle with out being obtrusive. By adhering to these
Drum Circle Etiquette guide lines you will make the drum circle experience
more enjoyable for yourself and throes people around you. You will then
be a fully participating and contributing member of an in the moment, rhythmical
alchemy orchestra, some times called a drum circle. o Don't wear rings,
watches or bracelets while playing hand drums. This protects the head on
the drum. as well as the drum its self from the metal. It also protects
your hands. o Ask permission before playing someone else's drum. For some
drummers their instrument is a very personal possession. Also if some one
gets up and leaves the circle to get a drink or go to the bathroom don't
immediately jump in and take their seat. In some drumming communities the
drummers will put something on their seat, cover their drum with something
or lay their drum on it's side to signify that they will be back oListen
as much as you play. By listening to what's going on in the circle as you
play, you will have a better sense of how you might fit into the groove
that is being created. o Support the fundamental groove that you hear in
the drum song being created in the circle. You don't have to be a rhythm
robot and hold down the same part all night long. There is plenty of freedom
with in the fundamental groove to experiment with, while expressing your
rhythmical spirit. o Leave rhythmical space for other players in the circle
to express themselves. Don't fill up the space with your own notes so much
that there isn't much creative space left for the other players. o Play
at the volume of the group. If you can only hear your self, your probably
not having a constructive musical relationship with the rest of the players
in the circle. Good volume dynamics create good relationship dynamics.
Play softly enough so that you can hear every one around you. While your
drumming, be sure to follow and support the dynamic changes in volume and
tempo that the group will go through during a drum circle event. o Share
the solo space. If you are at the advanced level of rhythmical expertise
where soloing with your drum is available to you, then you know the excitement
and pleasure of being able to play over, around, and through the drum circle
groove. Soloing through a drum circle groove is very much like a bird flying
through the forest. But the "solo air" above can't accommodate more than
a few people soloing at the same time. If there are more than one soloist
available in a circle be sure to share the solo space with them. The best
way for two or three drum soloists to play through the groove together
is to have a " drum dialogue" with each other. In a facilitated drum circle
event a good facilitator will have found all of the advanced drummers in
the circle and would be 'Show casing" them individually or encouraging
them to 'trade solos with each other. o Don't smoke in the circle. Drumming
is a high energy aerobic exercise. Respect the need everyone to breath
in such a closely backed environment. Advice for Beginning Beginners Along
with the standard Arthurian drum circle etiquette suggestions, I have some
advice for beginning beginners who are joining a drum circle event for
the first time. Enjoy the journey. In all the excitement don't forget to
have fun. Although it will help you to follow the simple Drum Circle Etiquette
guide lines, you don't really have to be an experienced drummer to fully
participate and have a good time Don't worry, even if you might think that
you are rhythmically challenged. Just get started and you will find rhythms
inside of you that you didn't know you had. All you have to do is actively
participate in the drum circle event, and the excitement and rhythms that
will surround you will pull out of you exactly what you need to fully contribute
to the group song. You don't even need to play a drum. You can bring a
simple percussion instrument, like a shaker, a bell or a wood block. They
are a lot easier to play than a hand drum. Support the drum community experience.
If you are participating in a drum circle event for the first time, the
best way to play is with an attitude of humility and support. Be very observant
of the actions and reactions of the more advanced drummers who are playing
in the circle. and you will learn a lot quickly Keep it simple. Listen
for, then play along with, and around the pulse that will always be some
where in the music. It is like keeping the side of the pool within reach
as your learning how to swim. The simple pulse will always be there for
you to "grab on to" if you ever get rhythmically lost while playing. Once
your comfortable with what you are playing, you can explore deeper rhythmical
waters. Just keep the pulse in site. Don't be afraid to ask. Every rhythm
event is different, and has it's own particular variations of Drum Circle
Etiquette. If you're not sure what's appropriate, just ask somebody. They
usually will respond with supportive suggestions. There is a basic agreement,
in these kind of events, that each person in the circle is there to share
their rhythmical spirit and personal energy with the community that is
present. With this kind of group conciseness, even a large drum circle
can be a very powerful, yet intimate experience for everybody as they create
unity in their community by drumming together. The musical part of any
drum circle will take care of it's self , if every player is there to share
their spirit and have fun. Life is a dance ........ Arthurian Arthur Hull

of ideas, of births and beginnings, Guardians of the Air, Come be with
us! We have come to drum in a sacred way! (All turn South:) Grand Mothers
and Grand Fathers of the South, hear us: we have come to drum in a sacred

our passions and our labors, over our will and our deeds, come be with
us! We have come to drum in a sacred way! (All face the West:) Grand Mothers,
Grand Fathers of the West, hear us: we have come to drum in a sacred way!

Mothers, Grand Fathers of the North, we have come to drum in a sacred way!
You who guard the doorway to the Mystery of Life and Death, you who know
the Source of all power, and the secrets and wisdom of all things, born

face the center and touch the Earth:) Great Mother Earth, hear our drums!
our bodies are your own. You support us, you nourish us, you carry us in
your bosom. We have come to drum in a sacred way! (All raise arms towards
the Sky:) Great Father Sky, listen to us! You who grant us the light of
the Sun and the Moon and the inspiration of the Stars, Be with us! We are
here to drum in a sacred way! (heart-beat drumming begins, gradually moving

I always felt, like an earlier writer to this feedback section, that
,drum circles CAN have a desirable effect on humanity, regards the bringing
of disparate social cultures together-thru rythmn- such that it can be
made obvious thru drumming and dancing that, even though practicing some
things different, we are all one when it comes time to experience the joy
of these, and other things....One has only to watch the faces of people
in attendance of just such an "effective" drum circle , as is the DRUM
CIRCLE VENICE,to wonder at just who in the world IS'NT there!!!In other
words, a quick glance around, at about sunset time, on even an average
Sunday, and you will see the whole spectrum of humankind, every skin shade
and color, and the drums and the percussion instruments to match....This
being observed by myself and countless others, would it not be a good idea
for a drum circle like that which we have at Venice beach, to pick a "sister"
city, say, somewhere in the middle east, maybe like JERUSALEM say, a place
where it is needed, that people find what they've in common, rather than
what they've got thats' different- that which they usually fight about-
and, making a commiment to communicate to this "sister" city , these images
of brotherhood, that ,there should ,could and would be the hoped for effect
of bringing a potential of "peace"- though not exactly quiet, for this
IS drumming and dancing- to the middle east, or at least a small but IMPORTANT
portion of it???thus said, it would likewise be a good thing to suggest
that where ever there is a drum circle held with some degree of regularity,
this circle might make effort to contact another place in the world, a
place that might not have a circle going on routinely, and, that might
very well benefit the peoples of the neighbouring areas by becoming so....Griffith
Park would have it's sister, as would the Berkeley drum circle, Santa Cruz
too, and so on and on.... All this in an effort to get peoples of all races
and creeds and of all places , to have even more opportunity to tune in
to what's in them ,that's also in all others.... V'ketah 9/29/2001 11:15pm

Saturday, August 25: Eighth Monthly L.A. Rainbow Family Tribe Monthly
Beach Bonfire Drum Circle Folks from the Los Angeles area are invited to
enjoy a totally free, non-commercial, humanly diverse, five-hour, unplugged
peace sanctuary of drumming and dance on the sand. All sizes, colors, ages,
and genders of peace-loving, kind-hearted, non-judgmental, Nature-tuned
bellybutton owners are welcome. Takes place EVERY LAST SATURDAY OF EVERY
MONTH at the northernmost fire pits on Dockweiler State Beach (west of
L.A. Airport, south of Playa del Rey, north of El Segundo). Starts by 6
p.m. (although some have been arriving earlier to hang out for conversation,
frisbee, volley ball, and swimming) Drum circle ends at 10 p.m. (unfortunately
when the parking lot closes, and street parking ends - parking on the street
is free, parking in the lot costs several dollars per vehicle [so car pool!]).
Bring vegetarian food, good vibes, big Rainbow hugs, and kind love to share.
Bring water. Bring dancing tootsies. Leave safe room around the fire for
dancers. Make others feel welcome. Bring something to keep you warm after
Sun sets. Bring tribal drums and earthy acoustic/percussion instruments,
such as klave sticks, tambourines, rattles, etc. Also, flutes, violins,
didgeridoos, and ancient instruments are very welcome. PLEASE: Do NOT bring
stick-played rock & roll, snare, or marching band-style drums. Do NOT
bring electronic music or electric instruments. It is a Rainbow Family
tradition to keep the drum circles alcohol-free. Do not bring any type
of alcohol. This is not a booze party. If you want to drink, go someplace
else. We do not want the alcohol energy here. Also, in the tradition of
a Rainbow Family event, there should be absolutely no buying or selling
of anything at this gathering. However, handing out of free environmental,
human, and animal rights literature is okay. Bring clean wood for the fire
(free of nails, glass, paint, laminates, and varnish ó and, please, no
chemically saturated fake/particle wood as these are not good to burn).
Please respect the fire and the natural surroundings. Keep the fire inside
the pit. Do not jump over the fire. Do not throw trash or cigarette butts
into the fire or onto the ground (use the trash cans - leave the beach
clean). Help clean the beach by picking up any litter and depositing it
into the trash cans. Please leave dogs at home. If you insist on bringing
a dog, please keep it on a leash and under your direct control, and clean
up its droppings. Respect the wishes of the life guards and beach patrol.
Remember, this takes place the LAST Saturday of every month. Building our
L.A. Rainbow Family Tribe. Practicing our Constitutional Right to gather
freely and peacefully on public lands. Welcome home!

Hello ....I just perused your site ......and think it would be wonderful
if you could let your audience of drummers know about the WORLD'S LARGEST
ALL NATIONS DRUM CIRCLE...and maybe even provide a Link to our site....
Drummers are traveling across the continent to be a part of it.....perhaps
you could even forward this email to your contacts....thank you... We in
Vancouver (with Collaborators from all over the US and CANADA) are hosting
the 2001 SUMMIT ON SPIRITUALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY from Sept.15 to 22,
2001, a week long event drawing attention to what is working in our world....that
is conscious and earth-friendly......so we may build a resource base....to
make it easier for the next guy to make the changes in their industry/organization/world....towards
a more sustainable future! The closing celebration is turning into the
WORLD'S LARGEST ALL NATIONS DRUM CIRCLE as we call for 5000 hand drummers
of all cultures from the PACIFIC NORTHWEST to SHATTER the Guinness Book
of Records, all in the name of co-creation, community and Spirit.......(may
we take a moment to honor our family in Africa who drum in gatherings likely
even exceeding ours !)......we will be taught 6 world rhythms in the morning....and
will demonstrate our drum spirit at 5:30pm for 2 to 2 1/2 hours drumming.
We would love it if you could put a link on your website, Arthur ....and
promote this wonderful event....all of our major drum leaders are leading
it (so far from Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Nelson and Cortez Island)
along with Sal Ferreras, our renowned MC.......lets join together to celebrate
the Fall Equinox, the 2001 Summit, each other and all that creates more
awareness and more life! People in Vancouver are offering their floors
for our American Cousins, and others who travel from far, to crash....for
1 or 2 nights.....just need to ask and bring a foamie and a sleeping Bag!
Also here is a link to our website and in particular the Drum Event if
you could link us please ! : http://www.2001summit.org/media/WLDrumCircle.html.
And here is another brief overview: We will be breaking the Guinness World
Record for the number of drummers drumming a specific rhythm together (the
record is 1900 drummers in Amsterdam this year... before that it was set
in Spain...1700 drummers ....but they only drummed for 5 minutes consecutively)....we
will drum for over 2 hours!!!! .....we will be drumming 6 different rhythms
consecutively (that will be taught to us at 11:30am at the Plaza after
we register)....and we will be a minimum of 2001 drummers!!! CHALLENGE....LET'S
BE 5000 DRUMMERS! The Plaza is covered in glass and even if it rains it
can cover 10,000 people (or 5000 with drums!) Please remind each person
who you forward this to, that the only way we can truly let all drummers
in the Pacific Northwest know about this great and huge event, is if each
person takes it upon themselves to tell all their contacts, and ask their
contacts to do the same, and on and on !!! Thank you.... ....and also to...
1) bring a stool or collapsible chair if possible and $10. registration
fee. 2) lunch if needed (there will be food kiosks and restaurants open
right there for us too...and water is being graciously supplied by Canadian
Springs) 3) t-shirts heralding this event will be sold too...so if they
wish one, plan this in the budget...maybe $15? 4) we will be finished approximately
8pm (but people can stay and drum til 11pm if they wish) ...registration
is from 8:30 to 10:30am... the training is from 11:30 to 1:45pm, then there
is a 2 hour break and then at 3:45pm a sacred ritual honoring the 2001
Summit and the actual Fall Equinox (which is at 4:05pm)....from 4:15 to
5:30 there will be a WORLD CAROUSEL OF 15 PERFORMANCES... and at 5:30pm....our
DRUM CIRCLE!!! (for 2 to 2 1/2 hours!) (we can drum ALL DAY LONG except
for the 2 hours from 3:30pm to 5:30pm 5) PRE-REGISTER by calling (604)
542-0724 or emailing me challamar@home.com (very important for number count)
6) drum rentals will be available on site for $5. for the day...call and
reserve one with Milton at (604) 241-4712 7) and please check out www.2001summit.org
before you come so you know what a wonderful "coming together" we are celebrating!
I shiver at the possibility of what we can create in the name of Spirit....

Hi Sondra, We're back in the Great White North, and it's hot and humid,
but it's good to be home. Although missing the Venice Beach Drum Circle
every Sunday is definitely a downer. The Circle will always be a highlight
of our year in L.A. I'll be seeking out the local drum circles, and once
I find who, where, what, and how, I'll send you some info and maybe even
a pic or two. Drumming keeps the blood flowing on long winter nights, don't
ya know! Later, Robin McAlpine of the Clan McAlpine P.S. Do you have a
copy of that pic you took of our whole family on our last Drum Circle?
If you still have it, is there any way you could email it as an attachment?
We'd love to have a copy of it.

Ive loved going to the circle the last few months after I moved here
from Arizona. I just read a posting here about a drum camp, and wondered
if anyone has an opinion about the usefullness of something like that.
I think Id like to pick up drumming and periodically join in the group.

For the past two months I have been going down to the drum circle on
Saturdays. I look forward to that day when I put my djembe on my shoulder,
ride the bus, and follow the sound of the beating drums. When the circle
is "on", there is no better "high" than that. The energy lifts me up to
a place that nothing else has taken me. Slowly I am recognizing faces and
learning names. Thank you all for being there. Secondly, being a beginner
drummer, I do have many questions. Should I get lessons? And if so, where
do I start looking? I would like to also learn some tribal beats. Hopefully
someone will email me back with some suggesstions, or just to say hi and
introduce themselves to me so I can get to know more people there.

I knew I always felt good at a drum circle. Maybe this little medical
study gives a clue as to why: This little quote comes from The Genetic
Mystery of Music in the current(August 2001) issue of Discover magazine
pp 71-75. The quoted section is on page 73. Quote: Music can also mitigate
stress. In one recent study, neurologist Barry Bittman of the Mind-Body
Wellness Center in Meadville, Pennsylvania, gathered a group of 10 people
and had them beat hand drums for an hour while a music "facilitator" conducted.
Afterward, Bittman took blood samples. The drummers,he found, had heightened
levels of immune cells called natural killer cells that seek out and destroy
both cancer cells and cells infected by viruses. A control group that read
in silence experienced no such upsurge. Bittman believes that group drumming,
through its camaraderie, support, exercise, and music making, signals the
brain to lower the production of cortisol, a stress hormone secreted by
the adrenal glands. Less cortisol has been associated with a heightened
immune response and may help the body fight off infection. "I'm not saying
I have a cure for cancer," Bittman cautions. "But what I am saying is that
we have a very important step in understanding a delightful, enjoyable,
and fun way for people to reverse the stress responses in a manner that
lead us to positive biological changes."

Hello, I am painting a community mural sponsored by SPARC ( Social
and Public Art Resource Center) and the city of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs
etc., on the Pioneer Bakery on Rose Ave. I plan on including images of
the Venice Beach Drum Circle and local drummers and musicians. One thing
the mural hopes to do is to nurture and encourage the youth of this community
away from gangs and crack by creating a monument to positive change and
culture. Another goal is to continue the process of imagining the culture
and community we want to create and pass on. We'll be holding a community
meeting on July 12 at the Pioneer Bakery at 6pm. Can you please share this
information with members of the drumming community who identify in some
way with the Oakwood area ? Love your website, Francisco Letelier

Brothers and Sisters. I'm going to the rainbow gathering this year.
I will be driving from LA. if anyone needs a ride write me. Also you might
see me at the Venice drum circles. Venice Beach is one of my favorite places
and has been since I was little. I enjoy the laid back atmosphere and dancing
to drum circles. I just moved to LA from Montana. Big change. I can't wait
to go the Rainbow Gathering. It's going to be a blast. Peace and Love to
my brothers and sisters.

GLOBAL COOLING, FRIDAY-SUNDAY 3rd-5th AUGUST, SHEFFIELD, UK Sundaze
and Disoriental present a free chillout weekender at Revolution and The
Showroom Cinema, Sheffield. Saturday and Sunday promises a mix of jazzy
breaks, global beats, electronica and dub blended by DJs and live acts,
supported by VJs, installation artists and performers including percussionists
from Morocco and the Yemen. And more drummers are welcome. Revolution's
friendly staff and laid-back sofas and decor, huge range of vodkas and
vodka mixers, and world food provide the ideal venue for the weekend-long
chillfest. The bar is situated in an ex-bus garage, creatively using the
original architecture to provide a large, light bar-club space. Whirl-Y-Gig's
global dance DJ Monkey Pilot makes a rare appearance outside of London
and there are DJ sets by ambient dubsters Sounds From The Ground, Porky
of Pork Recordings and Catskills Records' Ian Cracknell (who records as
Vibra). Playing live are musicians with origins in Morocco, the Yemen,
Argentina and Yorkshire. They join DJs from such Sheffield clubs as Remedy,
Destination Venus, Planet Zogg, JuJu, DubCentral and Headcharge as well
as the usual Sundaze residents. The weekend is launched on Friday night
by a special free screening of cult 1971 sci-fi movie, Silent Running in
the Showroom Cinema, the UK's largest independent cinema, with a new DJ
soundtrack performed live by Sundaze DJs. Directed by Douglas Trumbull
(behind the special effects for 2001 and Blade Runner), it tells the story
of a future biosphere containing the last of nature floating in orbit around
a dried-up earth. Bruce Dern is the astronaut with a conscience who disobeys
instructions to jettison the pods. Mouli and The Only Michael (of Brighton-based
laid-back band Feeler, described by Impact magazine as the "bastard daughter
of Spiritualized and DJ Spooky") are also playing before and after the
film. SHEFFIELD - WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT THEN? Sheffield is an ideal city
for chillin' and partying. There is a large range of good accommodation,
cafe bars and restaurants for taking it easy, and clubs for taking things
later into the night. We can recommend Remedy (www.remedy.org.uk/) on Friday
night and NY Sushi (http://welcometo/nysushi) on Saturday night, and being
summer there is always the chance of a free party nearby in a woodland
in the Peak District. The numerous hills open up views across the city
and out into the countryside. Woodlands lead directly out to the Peak District
National Park with plenty of opportunities for walking, climbing or mountain
biking. More details of what's on can be found at www.sheffieldscene.co.uk/home.html
